On the Academy Night from a couple of weeks ago, one of the aspects I talked about was how a lot of posts on Twitter show how a pupil has improved their golf during a lesson and the proof is nothing more than showing a before and after of their set-up or swing positions, with no mention of the ball flight, improved strike or distance change.
Just because a coach has a bias towards seeing a particular position in a golf swing, doesn't mean the pupil will improve by attaining that position. If that was the case, we wouldn't have the likes of Jim Furyk, Lee Trevino, John Daly or Bubba Watson! In fact there is only a 50/50 chance of the golfer improving long term.
Here is a photo from my first lesson back this week - the large, steep divots below the stick on the ground were during the golfer's warm-up, the smaller, shallower divots were the shots he hit following the instruction.
Now that shows real discernible improvement - but what was the swing change that brought about the improved impact condition? Well, that doesn't matter - there were a number of things we could have done that would have worked, we just chose one of them and it didn't matter how it looked!! Remember:
"The sole purpose of a golf swing is to create a correct and repeatable impact. The method employed is of no consequence as long as it's correct and repeatable." John Jacobs
PING's new 'G' driver is now in the shop to demo. There's been a lot of buzz about this club after the success of the G30 model, we found the G30 to be the most forgiving model on off centre hits which is what a lot of golfers need. The replacement G series provides the same forgiveness with a sculpted top designed like a dragonfly's wing. Click here if you'd like to book a fitting to try it out. We also have the TaylorMade M1, Titleist 915, Srixon 545, Mizuno JPX 850 and Mizuno JPX EZ models to try, plus other custom build favourites Tom Wishon, Miura and KZG.
FootJoy have released their new DNA shoe and we have a special early season offer of a free DNA shoe bag whilst stocks last. The shoes feature all the comfort and durability that FJ are known for and some extra stability this year from the flashy side bars.
Mizuno have a great offer for the next two months, with every set of 7 irons or more, you receive a free dozen Mizuno balls. They are 'seeding' the balls into the golf market and I used some while I was in Scottsdale and they felt great. The MP-S is a soft performance ball for golfers needing more spin, the MP-X is a higher flighting, lower spinning version and the JPX is an all-round ball for a combination of distance and spin.
They are part of the ball choices we have for 2016 - Mizuno, Srixon and Titleist. Talk to us if you're not sure which ball would suit your game.
In the workshop this week:
