Shop news

We've been busy this past week with the culmination of our winter projects in the shop. A couple of them were planned to take place whenever we were covered in snow but happily that's not happened for more than an hour this winter - so we've done them anyway. The continual long range forecast during Autumn 2015 was for the coldest, harshest winter in 60 years for the UK, even a month ago the forecast was for heavy snow all Easter - because of this I'm we didn't order much in the way of winter clothing and I'm glad as it turned out to be so mild all winter!

One of the projects was to move our industrial embroidery machine down into the shop. We've had it for 5 years now and bought it to enable us to offer a much quicker and bespoke logo clothing service which has been very successful. The machine usually lives in a room above the Pro Shop, where Katie can often be found shivering away and the cold temperature isn't good for the threads either so I wanted to do the same as I'd done with our workshop and utilise the shop floor more effectively. Many thanks to Steve Kanes who has been helping us (in fact he's done the whole thing from design to construction, although I did supply the coffee and a pencil!).

The way we've done it means we haven't lost any wall space and you'll be able to witness the machine in operation, which looks pretty cool.

We've also re-fitted the main bench in the trolley workshop upstairs with a stainless steel worktop and moved the large TV screen nearer to the counter, connecting it with Wi-Fi to the launch monitors in the studio so you'll be able to see all the ball flight and club data in the shop, whilst a fitting or lesson is taking place upstairs. Luke has also been busy clearing out all our old display stands and all the things he claims that I hoard unnecessarily from behind the studio driving nets. One of the things I've hung onto is a collection of Golf World and Golf Monthly magazines dating back to 1980!

It's amazing to read an article from 36 years ago which refers to exactly the same myths that golfers still believe in today, and especially one that I refer to nearly every day in coaching - which also forms the reason for my upcoming Academy night. In this case, Bernard Gallagher recounts the coaching he had from John Jacobs and the fact that lots of golfers are searching for a 'late-hit' and how this is the opposite of what would need to happen in 90% of golfers.

I come across this every week and explain why an 'early hit' is actually what top golfers do. My Academy Night opens with a quote from John Jacobs which forms the basis for all my coaching:

'The sole purpose of the golf swing is to produce a correct and repetitive impact, the method employed is of no consequence as long as it's correct and repetitive' The Academy Night is free of charge and is taking place after a lot of people heard about the first one I held in January. Members and non-members are welcome, all I'd ask is that you let me know that you're coming so I can get the room ready. The night starts at 7pm and there's nothing you need to bring with you, I'll be talking through some topics relating to your golf games and showing you some videos - finishing at about 8:30. Please click here to book or call the shop on 01785 661485.

Course news

Greens

The Greens staff have added more top dressing after the course maintenance took place over the past week. They have then used the greens iron for the first time on Tuesday and the results are stunning. We've gone from understandably bumpy greens following the timing process which lifts the greens a little, to almost summer speed and a much, much smoother roll on the ball. I think you'll notice a big difference when you next play and in a couple of weeks' time the new growth should be showing too. It all adds weight to the benefit at Brocton Hall of staying on proper greens all winter, even in the frost, when you can suddenly get greens as good as this before they've even been mown.

Members news

The Stafford Half Marathon takes place on Sunday. There are quite a few Brocton members running the 13.1 miles this year, including the Junior Captain, Holly Hunt and two members of staff with myself and greenkeeper Richard Quinne. The route can be seen here, if you're anywhere along the route, look out for us and give us a cheer (or some jelly babies!)

Social golf

Tuesday Social Golf

Amongst the most anticipated sporting events this year include 'Can Leicester City win the Premier League?', 'Can the US Ryder Cup team stop squabbling and win?' and by far the hottest topic - 'When does the Tuesday Social Golf re-start?!'

We usually have 30 - 40 people playing and most stay for food from the bar menu afterwards. Play is from the White, Red and Blue tees and the entry fee is £2 with the prizes being Pro Shop vouchers - you'll be glad to know the events are non-qualifying for handicap purposes too!

I play each week and try to play with as many different people as possible. This year there are a couple of improvements - we will be teeing off anytime between 3pm and 6pm each week (it used to be from 4-6) and we will be having a running order of merit based on your best 5 scores. After a few weeks, depending on the scoring, the bottom half of the order of merit will be split into a 'Silver Division' and they will start their own order of merit. This gives everyone plenty to play for during the year and adds a little more competitiveness.
