Hope you all had a good Easter, I was in at 5am on Sunday, getting some clubs built before tucking into my Easter eggs and
greenkeeper Lee was already there cutting the greens ready for the County match.
There are only a few days left to trade your old golf shoes in against a new pair of FootJoy DryJoys or Contours. Get up to £20 for your old shoes, in any condition.
I'll also take the chance to mention that we trade trolleys in at any time, not as a limited time promotion. As both a Powakaddy and Motocaddy service centre we can fix, service and re-sell the trolleys and have a strong secondhand market. Drop your trolley into the shop and we can give you a valuation for it.
The Tuesday social was won by Gary Murphy this week with 22 points. Come along next week between 4 and 6 pm to join in. I can heartily recommend the Omelette Arnold Bennett afterwards! The new menu is proving extremely popular.
We played the back nine this week and I made a birdie on the 18th by driving onto the Tarmac outside the clubhouse and getting up and down from there. One of my playing partners said "I thought your pitch shot was going to run through the green but you must have hit the ball first (before the Tarmac) because it spun and stopped quick". To which I remarked "well, yes it did spin but I hit the ground first, not the ball".
It's a common misconception that you have to "nip" the bottom of the ball with the leading edge of the club to create spin, but that's a very precarious way of playing a shot. The key is to use the 'bounce' on the sole of the club. In this case I used a 60 degree wedge which I have bent to 64 degrees loft. This creates more bounce than normal on the sole, meaning the leading edge sits further off the ground and resists the club digging in or getting caught on the surface. Hence, I can happily bang the club into the ground behind the ball without fear of it getting caught and the ball will spring off the club face, not off the leading edge.
Try it the next time you're in the walled garden, get the sole of the club to brush the ground 1 to 2 inches BEFORE the ball with a pitch shot. If the leading edge digs in - you've either leant the shaft towards the target at impact (taking off the bounce), or you need a club with more bounce to start with. Drop your wedges into the shop over the next 2 weeks and I'll measure the bounce for you, we can even grind the sole and create a much easier sole design to use.
What did Luke Donald and Matt Kuchar have in common as they continuously swapped the lead at Hilton Head on Sunday?
The answer is they both use ACCRA Tour Z shafts in their driver. Whilst this might not be the most exciting news you've ever heard, it's somewhat unusual as ACCRA are a relatively small Canadian company who only supply to Clubfitters - you'll never see them in off-the-shelf clubs.
Many companies supply a cheaper version of their shafts to the club manufacturers and the tour pros get the more precise 'tour issue' versions. With ACCRA, we use the same shaft that Donald, Kuchar, Peter Hanson and others get their hands on. These days they have to paint them with (for example) TaylorMade graphics in order to comply with the players contracts.
Here's a picture from FlightScope of the new ACCRA CS1 shaft performing in my driver, the acceleration curve on the screen is perfect for my swing style and speed. This means that the club is smoothly losing acceleration as the speed gains into impact, producing a very stable and consistent flight. If you were fighting a slice, you would want to see right hand side of the line pointing upwards at the end which would show the shaft helping the clubface square up and reduce the slice. It's one of the reasons that the FlightScope launch monitor is favoured by many of my fellow World Top 100 Clubfitters.

Junior/Family night
Much like the Tuesday Social golf, we are about to launch the junior/family night.
Also coming up shortly is the Junior Open on June 29th, the first time Brocton have staged such an event. The entry form can be downloaded from www.broctonhall.com. Christine and the Junior Organising Committee would love to see as many entries as possible to launch this event and promote the future golfers in the area.
