Hello golfers,
Divoting Party
Hopefully this headline makes sense as my auto-correct keeps changing 'Divoting Party' to 'Devoting Party' or 'Divorcing Party'!
Either way it takes place next Tuesday, 26th April, at 2pm and your help is required please. The intention is for 6 teams of members to accompany a greenkeeper along 3 holes of the course, filling in divots along the way with handfuls of seed and soil mixture. At this time of year the growth really starts to kick in and a large scale divoting (or devoting or divorcing) session like this will make a valuable difference to the fairways and tees leading into the season. Of course a party wouldn't be a party without some liquid refreshment so the Greens Committee Chairman, Kevin Mellor, has arranged a drink for everyone in the bar afterwards where we can share stories of under-clubbing divots, lip-outs with divots and the 'one that got away', plus I'll be able to talk you through my round divot style!
Please click here if you'd like to get involved and I'll add your name to the list in the bar. Why not play in the Tuesday Social afterwards - just don't take and divots!
Speed Golf for Pro's Day
Here's a great video from the European Tour. Last week in Spain, three teams were attempting to set a World Record for playing a single hole of golf - currently set at 68 seconds.
I'm planning on including this on my Pro's Day competition in September. The format for that day is a 3-ball Texas Scramble and I think it would be great fun for each team to attempt this on the 17th hole - but not including the score in the competition. Maybe we'll have a rehearsal on one of the Tuesday Social events before then.
Tuesday Social
This week we had 61 golfers playing in the social golf on a gorgeous Tuesday evening. Playing off the front 9 holes, the 12 prize winners were:
- 1st - Ken Skelton, 21pts - £16 - 2nd - Mike Dewsbury, 19 pts - £14 - 3rd - Gary Murphy, 19 pts - £13 - 4th - Adam Hawkins, 19 pts - £12 - 5th - Andy Metcalfe, 18 pts - £11 - 6th - Steve Smith, 18 pts - £10 - 7th - Matt Wilkes, 18 pts - £9 - 8th - Nev, 17 pts - £8 - 9th - Pete Lowndes, 17 pts - £7 - 10th - Ron Painter, 17 pts - £6 - 11th - Allan Cooper, 16 pts - £5 - 12th - Neil Johnson, 16 pts - £4
Next Tuesday we aim to be playing the back nine.
FREE Academy Night 28th April
If you missed the previous two Academy nights, I have another one coming up on Thursday, 28th April. It's a chance to come along to the club from 7pm until approx 8:30 pm, to listen to me dispel some myths about how to play the game and particularly about the golf swing. You'll learn:
- How to hit the next ball better - How you can diagnose your own ball flight misses - Why certain swings work and others don't
PLUS, you'll get an understanding of how my golf coaching works and how you can save time by not working on swing thoughts that will only make you worse. Please click here if you'd like to attend, I've had 70 golfers along in total in my past two sessions and this will probably be my last one until next winter.
NEW Driver Optimisation Session
Even though I've been a fully qualified golf club Master Craftsman for 10 years, I've learnt a heck of a lot in the past decade that you could only ever pickup through experience. Club fitting and club building are now the most sought out aspect of my position here at Brocton Hall and bring a great many people in touch with the club, as well as giving us the unique ability to perform virtually every repair on site, speedily for the members and guests.
One of the things I've learnt is that driver fitting is a really tricky subject, especially with a lot of golfers already having clubs that perform quite well. So, I'm using this 1 year anniversary to launch our new driver fitting offer, which is called The Driver Optimiser. Here is a scenario I see in virtually every driver fitting up until now, for this example I'm using a right handed golfer with a slice:
- Current driver shot shape is a slice that starts off low and curves away to the right. - The launch is too low, the backspin is too high. - They approach impact on a descending blow, hitting the ground and breaking tee pegs - Whilst repetitive, the distance is down and any wind greatly affects the direction.
In this case the correct driver would need to be a very high loft, like a 5 wood, and a very short shaft, like a 3 wood. This would aid consistency but the ball would still travel a short distance, or even shorter than before, and the backspin would still be too high.
A harder covered golf ball would reduce the backspin and a lower tee height would do the same, but this would leave the golfer prone to mis-hitting the ball off the bottom of the club and slicing it even more and the hard ball may not be their preference around the greens.
The solution would be to improve the swing-path into the ball and anyone who has been to my Academy Nights knows that this can be done with just a few shots. Then, the golfer can make a change of driver and see a real difference, or we may see that their current club is already providing their maximum consistency and efficiency and there's no need to change.
Correct Driver fit before the Optimisation session: Correct Driver fit after the Optimisation:
15 degree loft - 11 degree loft 43" length - 45" length 65 gram shaft - 55 gram shaft Low tee height - Higher tee height Hard covered ball - Any ball they like 180 yards distance with slice - 210+ yards with straighter flight
The cost of this session is just £30 and would last an hour maximum. Click here if you would like to Optimise your Driver!
