Well, the world from our little island looks a different place than it was when I wrote last week's newsletter!
Somebody put it quite well when they related the EU referendum as akin to playing the 4th hole at Brocton Hall. The Remain campaign seemed to be suggesting a safe 5 iron off the tee and a longer shot into the green for a steady par. Brexit was gunning for launching driver at the green with a good chance of birdie but equally a possibility of going out-of-bounds.
Add to that Roy Hodgson's England football team tactics - they were going for wedge off the tee on the 4th, another wedge down the fairway, a couple more wedges up to the green and take your time six-putting into the hole and with any luck everyone else will have gone out-of-bounds at the same time!!
I like Marcus Willis' story at Wimbledon - the British player ranked world no. 772 who was convinced by his girlfriend not to give up tennis, ended up winning six matches to qualify for Wimbledon, won his first match against a Top 50 ranked player and now faces 7-time champion Roger Federer on centre court!! He's effectively hit a driver off the 4th tee, carved it into the field, bounced back onto the course into the bunker and holed it for eagle. His £200 winnings for 2016 so far, marginally eclipsed by the minimum prize money so far for him of £50,000. What a Cinderella story!
I played the Foremost Golf Championships on Monday this week at The Oxfordshire which is our best organised tournament of the year and I was glad to have Lewis caddying for me as he has finished his GCSE's now.
The course is 7,400 yards long without any run on the ball and at least another 2000 yards of walking between holes. The venue used to host the British Masters on the European Tour and has some impressive holes with huge lakes bordered by long par 5's.
As this picture shows, the amount of rain we've had this June can be seen as the red hazard marker posts are well into the water as all the lakes are overflowing.
Back at Brocton and it's always great to come back and play our course in better condition than a renowned championship venue. On Tuesday the greens were so smooth and true which bodes well for the upcoming Captain's weekend. Tuesday's Social golf was the final of the current Order Of merit season, the best 3 out of 6 weeks counting and we've had 126 players competing so far.
This week's results:
1st Harriet Painter 21 points £12
2nd Steve Treadwell 18 £10
3rd Mike Dewsbury 18 £8
4th Luke Howe 18 £6
5th Ron Painter 17 £4
And the final order of merit results:
Premier League (Div A)
1st Steve Treadwell 61 points
2nd Josh Smith 57
3rd Daz Poole 57
Numpty League (Div B)
1st Mark Bendall 56 points
2nd Sean Nelson 52
3rd Graham Hagan 51
Part-Timers (Div C)
1st Richard Hocknell 46 points
2nd Angela Byers 42
3rd Adam Matthews 42
We have now re-jigged all the divisions and will be starting another Order Of Merit series, best 3 scores from 6 weeks starting next week.
Well done to everyone involved in the Junior Open last Sunday. It was a very well organised event, supported by the officers of the club and 36 juniors competed from around the County with some home victories from Alex Dommett-Pelaez (winner of the Stableford), Ellie Treadwell (3rd in the Stableford) and Hannah Golding (Best back 9).
