This week was the last of the 6 week Order of Merit event. There's been 131 golfers play in the Tuesday Social this year and it's great to see everyone mixing in an enjoying the golf. The best scores out of 6 weeks decide the Order of Merit and The winners of each league were:
Premier League
(Div 1): Daz Poole 58 Steve Treadwell 56 Ellie Treadwell 56 Numpty League
(DIV 2): Ian Thwaites 56 Ken Skelton 56 Paul Dunlavey 55 Part-Timers
(Div 3): Will Hall 51 Ian Gwinnell 51 Keith Howe 49
As before, we'll lump all the scores into one division and divide that into three new leagues and we'll start another 6 week Order of Merit event.
Well done to Ethan Evans again who won the junior competition on Monday with a gross 79, nett 63.
Good luck to the Captain and Lady Captain for their charity Am-Am on Sunday. There's a silent auction and a raffle as well that you can get involved in even if you're not playing on the day and it all raises money for worthy causes.
We have a new member of green staff joining us this week. John has joined us, previously at Lakeside Golf Club and is a welcome member of the team in a year which has seen so much growth on the course. Head Greenkeeper Andy brought him into the shop to meet everyone (and maybe show him where the real bean coffee machine is?!?!). A new member of staff on the course is quite a rare event as the current team have racked up quite a few years between them.
The Pro-Am next Friday (19th August) is full to bursting with 41 teams taking part. Thanks to everyone in each department at the club for their involvement and to the Lady Captain for arranging cover for his halfway house. Amateurs are competing for £3,500 of prizes and the professionals play for a purse of £5,000. If you'd like to come along and watch, please do so. I could do with two or three people to ball-spot in the first hole to keep it running smoothly. Please click here if you'd like to volunteer.
Mike Dewsbury and Neil Johnson are away competing in the Eden Tournament at St Andrews this week. 240 golfers compete over the Eden and New courses over 36 holes stroke play to qualify for 6 rounds of matchplay around the Eden course. Neil had a tee off time at 6:48am on he first day, which is a challenge! but it's such an amazing place that any time to play golf there feels a privilege. Mike has had a fantastic couple of days and looks to have won the 36 hole scratch event leg by shooting 70 and 71 and qualifies as number 1 seed for the matchplay stages. Awesome golf again Mike! Google the Eden Tournament and you can follow their progress.
Tuesday Social this week was more Autumnal than summer but 56 golfers took part and the winners were:

2nd Paul Dunlavey 20
3rd Will Hall 20
4th Gary Murphy 19
5th Dave Robertson 19
6th Holly Hunt 18
7th Ken Skelton 18
8th Richard Egan 18
9th Ian Gwinnell 18
10th Wayne Bailey 18
The Captain and I played another match away at Leek on Saturday in the club fixture. The course was in great condition and the welcome was as friendly as normal (which is very friendly!) Unfortunately our opponents weren't as friendly on the course as we lost 7 -5, but I'm happy that the Captain and I were 7 under which managed a half (Tough School!).
A Busy week in the workshop this week:
- Srixon 945 blades 4-9 Nippon Modus 120 shafts
- Cleveland 46 degree sand wedge Nippon Modus shaft
- Mizuno MP25 5-pw True Temper XP95 shafts
- Vega VC01 reshaft 3- PW Nippon Modus 120 shafts
- PING Rhapsody wood re-shaft Wishon S2S shaft
- Hogan forged irons 4-pw Dynamic Gold Pro shafts
- Srixon driving iron DG Pro shafts
- Miura K Grind, Y Grind and C grind wedge DG Spinner shafts
- Mizuno JPX driver ACCRA i-series shaft
- Titleist 915 hybrid ACCRA i-series shaft
I have built a set of irons this week which are designed to all be the same length. Bryson DeChambeau made waves on the PGA Tour this year as he uses a 'single length set' with every iron the length of a 7 iron. Golf companies have dabble with single length sets for 40 years or more but have never sold enough to warrant the R&D spend. Tom Wishon has made the STERLING iron set and his background is custom built and custom designed clubs so he's not interested in huge retail numbers, it's more important for Tom to have quality option for different golfers.
I've built this set at 7 iron length with regular middleweight steel shafts for people to demo them. If you'd like to have a round with them, come in and take them out. I'll be interested in your feedback as its relatively uncharted territory. They come PW, 9, 8, 7, 6 iron and then there is the choice of a 5 iron or 5 hybrid. Golfers who hit the ball low will tend to struggle to get lower lofted iron in the air, especially at 7 iron length so this is where the hybrid comes in.
