I wasn't a fan of golf being included in the Olympics but I have to say the conclusion with Rose and Stenson battling for Gold and Silver was a thrilling climax, maybe I'm biased as there was a British interest. It certainly wasn't stunning coverage, educated commentating or a great course design that caused such interest!!
What was interesting was how the players had to cope with distractions not normally found at tournaments - spectators answering mobiles and idly chatting, photographs being taken from every angle plus the many occasions where a member of the public simply picked up a golf ball and tossed it back into the fairway to be helpful or took it home for a souvenir!
We were at the golf club to watch the Captains Charity Am-Am prize giving and auction which couldn't start until the conclusion of the golf as the bar was packed at that point. The Captain and Lady Captain both hosted the day which was fully supported and had some great auction prizes. I'm not sure how much was raised for the Brain Tumour charity but it looks like it will be many thousands of pounds.
Well done to everyone involved in running the event, volunteering and providing raffle and auction prizes.
The Captain had an aching back as we had played a Captain Pro match on Saturday against last year's defending champions and whilst he played really well, I was absolutely pathetic. His back ache came from carrying me round all day which was even more frustrating as I've been playing so well lately and we lost on the 17th. Mick Dilworth and Josh Smith were 7 under when they won and Josh carried on playing well next day and was in the winning team for the Captains Am-Am.
Lots of you have had a look at the 'Single Length' set of irons in the shop. They are a demo set so please feel free to take them out on the course. I'm not convinced which golfers they will suit as yet so it's a blank canvas.
The workshop has been very busy this week and a set of particular interest is some Ben Hogan irons which I am building for a Professional golfer. They are only available in America at the moment and the interesting thing is that they don't have club numbers stamped on the sole, they just have the club loft. In fact, they make a club in every single loft from 17 degrees right the way through to 63 degrees.
You simply choose the loft gaps that you want in the set. I've always said that if I designed a set I would do this and put loft not club number on the sole - in this way you can compare apples to apples with other manufacturers and not be hoodwinked by falsely strong lofted irons making you think that you're hitting the ball further.
Correction - 2 weeks ago I reported that Mike Dewsbury had set the amateur course record with a 64, this was incorrect as Simon Bright had shot the same score and set the record last summer.
I don't think there will be another record set this week in the Pro-Am as I can't see anyone beating Andrew Willey's 61 from last year. The first tee off is at 8:10 on Friday and the last is 3pm. Come along and watch or help ball spotting on the 1st to help make the day run smoothly if you like.
It's a busy week at the club with great weather, the Ladies Club Championship on Wednesday and the County Seniors Championship on Thursday. Then after the pro-am we've got the home leg the match v Beaur Desert on Saturday and a medal on Sunday - we used to get quieter in August as everyone was on holiday but this had been a hectic week so far. Please bear the tee bookings in mind if you're planning to come of some golf. The fixtures can be found at broctonhall.com under the Diary tab after you've signed in.
