My Pro's Day for the Ladies takes place this week and we are promised a beautiful day for it. Texas Scramble is the format and Katie and I will be meeting all the competitors at the halfway house with something cool and refreshing - and I'm not talking about the clubs new sock rule!
Pro's Night Party Saturday 24th September 7pm for 7:30pm
Once again it's that time of the year - my Professional Day's Party, or is it Pro's Day Party or Pro's Night Party?!?
Whatever, - it's open to all members, you do not have to play to come along to the evening and this year we have decided to have a hot and cold buffet for the evening and a great band which comes highly recommended.
'The LongTones' are a 4 piece cover band playing everything from The Beatles and Elton John to The Stone Roses and Pharrell Williams. You can check them out here.
Come along and bring your other half for an enjoyable and usually very memorable evening.
Tickets are available from the Pro Shop - £20 each or there is a table plan in the clubhouse where you can place your name. You don't have to play in the competitions to attend - the more the merrier!
Congratulations to Brocton Hall Junior Hannah Golding on being selected for the England Golf Under 16s West Midlands Squad. Hannah had trials last Saturday and she received her confirmation letter yesterday. Hannah is having a great year, despite an early season injury, and recently became the Brocton Hall Ladies Club Champion. The 36 hole competition was held on the 17th Aug and Hannah had a flawless 1st round shooting a gross 73! Congratulations again Hannah!
The Hollow tining process has gone well and the greens are certainly growing at full capacity at the moment. The grain on the greens is phenomenal - hit a putt across the mowing lines and the ball turns left, right, left, right all the way to the hole. This effect is greatly exaggerated on wet, freshly mown greens with fresh, new blades of grass which is what we are seeing at the moment. With this week's temperatures they should be running smooth and true in the medal on Saturday and you won't be able to tell the works been done.
Hopefully the torrential storm we witnessed on Tuesday evening hasn't washed all the top dressing away. It did wash the Tuesday Social away however as we had to abandon it due to a ferocious thunderstorm at 5pm and only 2 golfers had finished.
Some new clubs from Japan are making their way into the Pro Shop at the moment. We have the new Srixon line up of woods, hybrids and irons and new JPX900 range of irons and woods from Mizuno. I generally deal with Japanese manufacturers as they produce golf equipment to exact tolerances and Srixon, Miura and Mizuno are great examples of these. Not to be left out, we'll also have the new Titleist 917 driver in shortly to try out.
Of course the heads are nothing without the correct powerhouse, the shaft. Here is a picture taken this week from our Workshop display area where I went through our shaft offerings and lined them up in order.
But what is the order? Is it price from top to bottom, or shaft weight from top to bottom, or flex? None of them, it's actually the flight that the shaft will produce - the lowest hitting shaft is on the bottom with the highest hitting shaft on the top.
In amongst the shafts on display at each height range there are some heavier and lighter shafts, some which will feel hard, some which feel soft and that is why there are so many of them.
The good news is that only a small fraction of these shafts will be suitable for each individual and that's where my experience as a fitter comes in.
Congratulations to my assistant Luke Howe who won the Midland PGA Assistant Professional Championship at Walsall on Monday.
He played great and scored 14 birdies for a total of 5 under and won by 3 shots in the 36 hole event which has been running since 1929.
Past winners include PGA Tour winners Greg Owen in 1996 and Robert Rock in 1999 and I recall playing in it when these guys won - yes my memory is that good. He bogeyed the tough 17th in the final round but finished with a resounding birdie to see off the competition in style.
Well done Luke!
