Competition news

The Pro's Fiddle was postponed from Saturday as the course was waterlogged following 12 hours of rain! We're fortunate that Brocton doesn't close much at all compared to other courses in the area but this year most of the wettest times have been Friday nights and Saturdays. At least we have the benefit that the next day the course is in great shape and 22 pairs took part in a Betterball Stableford off the yellow tees.

The winning score was 46 points from Chris Perks and Phil Musker with 5 other teams on 42 points. A full list of winnings is on the competition results board. I was going to list the whole results here but I'm away at a golf show and forgot to bring it with me!

Pros news

We're at the MK Dons Stadium for a 2-day Foremost Golf conference which I always find very valuable - especially to have the chance to work 'on the business' rather than 'in the business' for a few days. It's a great chance to talk to other pro-active professionals and there's so many great PGA members who I've come to know that I only ever see on this trip as they might be on the south coast or in Scotland. I'm finishing writing this in my hotel room just before I go to the Annual golf awards hosted by the BBC's Andrew Cotter

I was nominated for Pro of the Year in 2014 and I may be up for a couple of awards this year:

'Most follically challenged golfer of the year'

'PGA Pro with the most pet hates' (finishing a speech with Safe journey home, clicking your fingers to stop the ball on the green etc.)

'Golf's biggest equipment geek'

'UK's unluckiest golfer otherwise you'd have win the Open by now'

We'll have to wait and see - if not, I'll just do some more networking with the free wine.

P.S.

My editor for this newsletter, Dan, will be here this week at the show.

I send him the content each week and he puts the whole thing together and I like to leave him to come up with the heading which you see in your inbox so it's just as much of a surprise for me as it is for you.

Thanks Dan for all your help and I'll get the first round at the free bar!

There are a couple of promotions for you to take note of, particularly given that electric trolleys are going up in price next year as I've just found out.

Motocaddy have a half price bag offer when you buy an S3 trolley. You have to have the Orange Dry Series or Pro series bag which doesn't quite match the colour of the trolley but it's a good deal.

Powakaddy have a FREE cart bag with any of their trolley range, the FW3, FW5, FW7S and Touch models. The bag choice is dependent on which model you have but the minimum value is £119 so it's a great offer. We have a demonstrator model which you can try out as well.

Workshop news

Winter has become such a busy time for club fitting and building as golfers make use of the studio and fewer competitive rounds. Here's a picture of just some of the clubs awaiting their new owners this week.

It was interesting to hear at the Golf Show that a lot of the professionals hadn't got a clue about the performance of different shafts. Sure, they knew what worked for them based on trial and error but they didn't know what options suited what type of golfer. As a customer, you don't need to know - but we certainly do. Of course the blame is often the golf companies as they don't offer enough options or they charge extra for anything other than their generic shaft which is nuts. This is why I got into club fitting in the first place and one of the reasons I use Mizuno as they don' charge any upgrades for shafts (even graphite) or grips for that matter.
