Now is the perfect time to get your clubs re-gripped for the upcoming season, there's only 5 weeks until the first medal. I've been testing out a new grip manufacturer called PURE grips (actually they've been around for a while), I've had a grip on my wedge for a year and it's still super tacky.
They are made from 100% rubber and I first tried them out when a junior member was allergic to normal grips with a mixture of compounds.
They come in a large variety of colours and sizes with a cord version too for extra grip in the rain.
Here they are in all their glory alongside the Mizuno JPX woods which have been flying out since they arrived last week.
Isn't golf just a ridiculous game?!? What you feel and what you do is often completely different and even when we have all the statistics, launch monitor data and knowledge to back things up - the reality is often still different from the truth.
Take Rickie Fowler at the Honda Classic this past weekend as an example. Over the four tournament days there was a statistic which has been much talked about since his win - he holed 57 of 57 putts inside 7 feet.
This sounds seriously impressive but if we dig a little deeper another story comes to light. We could be forgiven for thinking that most of these putts were 5,6 7 footers but of his 57 putts only 6 were longer than 4 feet in length and tour pro's hole 80% of those on average anyway. In fact half of his 57 putts were only 13 inches or less. So, he really only holed 6 putts that he would expect to make anyway to create this statistic and of course the statistic finishes at 7 feet because he missed one a few inches longer than that. What's more impressive though is that he holed 5 putts from 20 feet and a 40 footer on the last round which is way above tour average.
I was talking to a member last week about how golf is such a game of opposites. I was saying how I'll sometimes see a golfer with a particular ball flight miss and as we talk through the feeling they need to generate to improve the flight they totally get it and go ahead and put it into action, only to see them produce the exact opposite move in their swing and make the ball flight worse. Ironically I don't mind seeing that initially as I know they've got it, they just need to trust in allowing it to happen earlier in their swing, which they then crack and nail it - job done.
This same golfer came to see me this week and was launching the ball really low with his irons - we talked about how to launch it higher for his particular swing style and gain distance and consistency. His practice swing is spot on, he's got the theory, got the feeling and off we go... His launch angle goes the wrong way and the ball flight halves in height!! 'You see what I was talking about the other day' I mention. The shock on the golfer's faces can be entertaining as they feel they are doing one thing successfully, but the ball is telling them they are doing the exact opposite. (It's similar to the look they display when the ball flies awesome for the next few shots, with a feeling that is completely nuts to them.).
Very often this happens because the golfer is trying to control the grip end of the club instead of the head end. It can also be because they are used to thinking of their backswing with plenty of time to think, instead of the impact area which occurs really fast AND REMEMBER - YOU DON'T HIT THE BALL ON YOUR BACKSWING!
As a fledgling coach I would have been tempted to incorrectly add another fix into the mix assuming that something else is wrong and this is the trap the golfer tends to fall into - they invent another fault, "oh I must have swung too quick', or "I must have lifted my head". During another session this week a golfer kept telling themselves that they were swinging too fast. At the end of the session they asked me how they could hit the ball further. - 'Stop telling yourself to swing slower?'
What's the seamless link from all this information this week? - Well you might as well come and see what swing style you are and make sure you're not working on the wrong thing whilst the weather continues its struggle to hang onto the remnants of a wet winter like a toddler hanging onto their favourite blanket! Or, as I often say - simply do the exact opposite of what you think you should be doing and you'll be pretty much on track!!
I put this picture on Twitter with the comment that I was building a cage in the shop and invited nominations to be put in it - the finished article probably has more use.
Here's one of the suggested cage nominees - always a good sport Karl. Luckily for Nick Knowles and the rest of DIY SOS, Karl is back volunteering with them for another project - well done Karl!
Please endeavour to settle your shop accounts and don't forget to spend your winnings if you're in credit! Over the past week we've seen about 4 golfers, 1 Doris, 50 deer, 100 crows and a couple of badgers and it's only the animals which have been digging the course up so it'll be nice to see some people!
