Hello golfers,
"The Best Pitchers Of The Ball Don't Hit Great Pitch Shots"
The above is a comment I've made a few times lately during lessons. What I mean is that if you create a very forgiving impact area, with the club head skimming along the ground with the sole of the club brushing the turf, you'll hit good shots with any manner of strikes. You could first contact the ground 2 or 3 inches behind the ball, catch the ball a bit thin or decelerate and you'll still hit the ball closer to the hole on average than someone who tries to play with a narrow, unforgiving bottom to the swing. This golfer tends to stick the leading edge of the club into the turf or try to help the ball into the air and they have to achieve a perfect contact in order to get a good result. If you struggle around the greens, or don't hit many shots close, you'll be in the second camp and would do well to do the opposite of what you're doing now. Just try it and see.
I had a great example of the 'game of opposites' aspect to golf this week. A golfer came for a fitting for some irons a fortnight ago and he struck the ball pretty good but began to gradually hit the ball further left. I could see that he was trying to fix the left shot but was working on the wrong thing and inadvertently making it worse to the point where he was then hitting a mixture of extreme right and left shots. I stepped in and showed him what he should be doing to fix the left shot (which was the opposite of what he had been trying to do), and he went away to re-book in the future. The same golfer came back today, said he'd been playing well and his impact was phenomenally improved. In essence, he'd gone from a high spinning, high hitting golfer to a powerful flighted, lower spinning player and gained a huge 16 yards with his 6 iron yardage. He'd only had irons down to a 6 iron in the past and used hybrids after that previously, where as now he struck the irons with a real 'crack' and could use more irons and gain better distance control. We then set to improving his consistency with the club-fitting and it's thrilling to think of how much that golfer is going to love playing golf this summer.

Ladies Section Going From Strength-To-Strength
The ladies section goes from strength-to-strength at the club with 98 seven day lady members at the club. I run a beginner ladies class on Thursday mornings which was originally a non-members event, but now they're nearly all members. Between them they are the keenest golfers on the planet and one of the original members, Jane, played with me in the Tuesday Social last week too. The girls are keen too and Ellie Treadwell and Maria Tiffany Thompson can be seen at the club (or on Twitter in Maria's case) every week.
Ladies competitions are generally held on Wednesday which means they have priority on the course and the last few weeks have been very busy. I would suggest that all gents leave the course to the ladies until 12:30 on a Wednesday and please remember that guests can't be signed in on any competition days unless authorised beforehand by the secretary or senior Pro Shop staff.
Ladies Competition Results
Gilly Cooper won the ladies medal and Dorothy Cade Trophy on April 5th with a nett 66 and reduced her handicap from 22 to 20. Maria Tiffany Thompson won the medal comp on April 12th with a nett 69 and her handicap was reduced from 31 to 29. The ladies medal on April 19th was won by Coleen Painter with a nett 68 and her was reduced from 17to 16. Ellie Treadwell had a nett 67 and handicap reduction from 21 to 20 on April 23rd. The first 9 hole comp for the ladies was won by Monica Tedstone. Ladies Club Day was won by Ann Williams with a nett 71 and her handicap was reduced from 23 to 22.
Well done to all winners and great to see those handicaps falling. Keep up the great work!
Frank Sinatra Night
Congratulations Alison and all the bar and catering team for a successful Social night on Saturday. Brocton member Andy Beasley was fantastic as Frank Sinatra and everyone raved about the atmosphere.
Check out the boards or website for future social events.

Positive Reviews
We've had lots of appreciation for the shop layout and design lately which is great to hear. So many people have stopped me to say how good it looks and what a good range of stock we have. It's nice to hear as we put a lot of time into trying to strike the right balance of brands, price points, fashions and product categories. I was concerned that we'd created a pathway straight from the door to the counter and it's since we took steps and created a more scenic route to the counter that everyone has been commenting. But remember you don't have to be at the club to see what's in store. You can browse my shop online here.
I'm away next week watching the end of the Players Championship and then playing around TPC Sawgrass the next few days. So I'll see you after I've finished dunking balls into the water on the 17th! |
