Newquay trip I didn't get to see much of the last two days of the Open as I was playing the club match against Beau Desert on Saturday which Brocton won 7-1 and on Sunday I was driving down to Newquay.Looked like I missed a thrilling last 6 holes of golf. The Open sweep results will be up when I get back this weekend and the USPGA sweep will be set up next week. Whilst in Newquay, the park we're staying on has its own 9 hole golf course and we'd all taken our clubs to have a game at Newquay golf club anyway so it made sense to have a game. I should correct that, the park call it a pitch and putt course, so we took a putter and a wedge each. The 1st hole was simple enough, straightforward 110 yards. The 2nd hole was the most difficult par 3 I've ever played. It was 157 yards, double dogleg around knee deep rough and a blind hole tucked behind horse bushes! I think a 5 won that one. It turned out to be a full length par 3 course with punishing rough and one hole even had a huge mound right in front of the tee!!It was great fun for us but we lost 4 balls in 9 holes! They had easily enough space for 18 shorter holes, a genuine pitch and putt, and it's a wonder why at this game many people's first experience of golf for fun could be at a venue like this which makes it seem even harder than it should be. Take crazy golf for example, the whole object of the game is for the venue to make it as hard as possible for you to succeed, but they give you a scorecard to keep a track of who has won and who has lost anyway. Then, right at the end, you often get one shot to shoot a miraculous putt and win a free game - highly unlikely, so you leave having lost again! |
