Greetings from Nevil Bland
Brocton Hall Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

I’ll stop bothering you about my charity bike ride on August 10th after this week! My last big training ride is on Wednesday as I leave Stafford at 05:30 and get to my Mum’s in Leicester, 85 miles away some 6 hours later. Think I’ll be getting a lift back! A huge thank you to everyone who has donated so far, it’s very humbling when people give you their hard earned cash. So far I’ve raised just over £1100 and hope to reach £2000.

Here’s a picture of the fuel I need to take to get me there:

We only have 3 spaces left in the Pro Am for August 22nd for either members, non-members or hole sponsors. There are currently 37 teams and this event promises to be a great showcase for the club and an opportunity to come and watch some great golfers as well.

I have a sheet up in the clubhouse requesting ball spotters for the 1st hole. I need three spotters to help out with 2 hour shifts starting at 8:30am. Please put your name on the sheet if you’re able to help out. Many thanks to the Lady Captain and the ladies section who will be manning (or womanning) the halfway house for the event.

No sooner has the Open Championship finished, then the final major of the year on the mens tour appear over the horizon with the USPGA Championship next week at the awesome Valhalla golf club. This was the venue for the 2008 Ryder Cup where Nick Faldo was the European captain and the Americans won for the first time in 6 years. All 18 greens have been re-built since then so expect some big slopes and fast surfaces. My pick will once again be Matt Kuchar who is overdue for a win and Henrik Stenson as the best European. The Sweep is available in the shop now, £3 per go with prizes for 1st (£50), 2nd (£35), 3rd (£25) and worst score each day (£10)

It was very nice to have these comments forwarded to me this week, a golfer (Ray) had been researching equipment and fitters and had been sent to me by the American custom equipment guru, Tom Wishon Golf Technologies. Following the fitting and upon receiving his clubs, Ray sent this to Tom Wishon:

"Hello Tom.

Just a quick email, to let you know how extremely pleased I am with the wishon golf clubs I purchased from Nevil Bland at Brocton golf club, and also the advice received from you and Nevil was really first class.

Having the clubs "properly" fitted was the best thing I have done, and since purchasing the golf clubs, I have much more confidence and consistency, and absolutely love the clubs.

So, once again, many thanks for your advice taking the time to reply to my emails.

Best Wishes

Ray"

And then Tom Wishon himself copied me in on his reply:

"Ray

Thanks so much both for letting me know how well you liked the fitting work that Nevil did for you - and really thanks so much for taking my advice to go see Nevil to work with him. I'm so pleased you did that and happy that the results were positive so that you are enjoying this great game a little more. As one who has worked in Clubfitting research for most of my career, I know that if more golfers were to choose to work with an experienced fitter like Nevil, more golfers would be increasing their enjoyment of the game.

Thanks so much for sharing this with me and the very best wishes to you for more and more fun with this great game!!

Tom Wishon

Don Gillam had a brilliant win in the Lawrence Batley Over 80’s national tournament at Maxstoke Park last week. I’ve played with Don quite a few times at Brocton and elsewhere and he’s a super consistent performer. Well done Don!

Here’s a picture of Steve Hirst who holed a 193 yard 4 iron on the practice ground this week during a lesson. Think that worked! Matt Perrin also scored a hole in one on the 3rd hole in the medal on Saturday and on the same day Neil Flowers knocked his first shot out of bounds on the same hole and then holed his next one!

Some great scoring this weekend – George Johnson held his junior Captain’s Day on Friday had been out the day before and chosen his own pin positions – very tough pin positions by his own admission! Ethan Evans was leading with a great nett 64 until Jake Sheldon came in with a stunning gross 73 off 12 handicap, nett 61.

Jake, George, Hannah, Ethan amongst other juniors have been spending a lot of time at the club practising this holiday already so it comes as no surprise that as they put their coaching into play, the scores are tumbling.

25 golfers played a mixture of 18 holes and 9 holes and lots of volunteers were on hand to help out, with junior organiser Christine organising the day very well. Congratulations to George and all for a great event.

George then shot a nett 66 in Saturday’s July medal and Hannah took first place in Monday’s junior medal with a brilliant 89, nett 62 which is the first time Hannah has shot below 90 in competition – pretty good when you think this is off the ladies tees and she’s 11 years old!

The weekend however belonged to Matt Kirkland who shot a nett 63 in the medal on Saturday, then got his name on the board by winning the Lichfield Cup on Sunday finishing +7 in the bogey comp.

Summer clothing – Buy 1 get 1 half price on mens, ladies and juniors. Grab some summer bargains.

Check out our range of push trolleys – the days of the pull trolley have long gone!

Most popular shoes this week? - Ashworth Cardiff and ECCO Biom hybrid, both spikeless shoes and waterproof.
