Hello Golfers, Welcome to the latest edition of our weekly newsletter. In this week's email we launch a new era for our weekly communications, we take a closer look at your options in-store, and we pose an interesting question regarding the season's first major. Enjoy the read!

Can you hear the roar? I used to love watching Tiger Woods playing golf but didn’t think I was a fan anymore over recent years. It turns out I was wrong as his resurgence had me hooked over the weekend and I was willing him to hole everything and overtake Paul Casey, or at least force a playoff. It would surely have been the most amazing comeback in sports history in only his 4th event playing and with so much mental and physical baggage to contend with. Like him or loathe him, the TV viewing figures for Saturday were the highest for golf in twelve years! That’s right, the 3rd round of a minor tournament has beaten all the final rounds of the majors and the Ryder Cup for over a decade! |
With the US Masters only 3 weeks away, there’s going to be a lot of hype in the build-up and golfers are finally happy to pick him out in our sweep again! The sweep is available in the shop and you can pick a name at random for £3 a go.
The prizes are as follows:
- 1st = £50 - 2nd = £35 - 3rd = £25 - Worst score in each round = £10 each.

Quiz night Well done to Paul & Kate Hodkinson who ran the Quiz last week. It was a great atmosphere with the lounge full of confused faces and whispered answers. Get your names down for the next one as soon as the list appears as I think it will fill up fast.

Get ready for the season ahead Now is the perfect time to find out how far you hit your clubs in readiness for the golf season. Winter really messes up our yardages as the ball goes vastly different distances week to week depending on whether it’s hard with frost, soft with rain or very windy. Of course, these same effects will be felt throughout the year anyway but it’s vital to know how far we actually hit our clubs on average, compared to how far we THINK we hit them. With the GC Quad and simulator, we can select whatever condition we like for hitting and I have a setting that I use as a standard, I then measure three important average distances:
|
Carry - the distance to ball landing, I use this as the normal winter yardage Total - the distance to ball finishing, I use this as the normal summer yardage Maximum - the furthest total yardage shot hit with each club, this is useful for selecting a club when the pin is on the back of the green - making sure you don’t miss long. Here are my yardages taken this week showing the averages for carry, total and the maximum:

The Club gapping sessions are just £30, conducted indoors with some freshly ground coffee and I send a report of your recommended yardages through to you. |
Another element that is important to get right is the lofts and lie angles of your clubs. A good example took place this week as a Champions Tour golfers brought along his clubs for a fine tune in between tournaments in the USA. One of his wedges was too upright which explained why he was missing shots to the left with it, another of his wedges had 2 degrees more loft than advertised which also explained why he couldn’t get sufficient distance. The rest of his clubs required bending 2.5 - 3 degrees flatter and the exact opposite for his putter which needed to be 2 degrees more upright. The putter was a good example as he reckoned missing a single putt on the last green last week cost him a five figure number and the lie angle could be largely to blame. Time will tell, but at any level at this game, there’s no need to fight your equipment. Simply call the shop on 01785 661485 to book either of these sessions or click here to send me a message.

Green mapping We started a new project this week as we began mapping the greens for degree of slope and direction. Our aim is to standardise each green for pin placements. For example 1% and 2% slopes would be considered easier, 3% and 4% would be hard and 5+% would be impossible to putt to. I’ll be publishing our findings once we’ve finished them (it takes up to an hour to map a green) and it’s pretty revealing stuff so far!

New shoes! What a busy week we’ve had with new deliveries coming in. Check these shoes out from Mizuno, taken from the same mould as their athletic shoes in other sports. We also have more reserved styles from ECCO and FootJoy with the popular brogue and saddle designs. How about Skechers for superb comfort and extra cushioning in a range of styles? And there are some pretty cool, comfortable shoes from all these brands for ladies as well.

Our new era has begun Last week you received an email from us asking for your help. It wasn’t anything too onerous or time-consuming; simply sparing 20 seconds of your time to complete your golfing profile. |
The reason we’re asking you to do this is so that we can start sending you personalised content that is more relevant to your golfing needs. For example, if you’re a lady golfer with a handicap of 28 then the weekly emails you receive will include ladies product that will be suited to your playing ability. Likewise, if you’re a gentleman off 12, we will begin sending you content that will help you to get your handicap down to the holy grail of single-figure digits. Thank you to everyone who has already completed their profile and for those of you who haven’t been able to as of yet, please try and do so in the near future. |
