Congratulations to Steve Kanes who is our latest member to sign the 'Wall of Success' after winning the Centenary Salver with a nett 66.
Steve Witton scored a nett 63 off 25 handicap but the Salver is a board comp so the maximum handicap to win is 18. I was pleased Steve had a good knock after I gave him a lesson on Friday and got him hitting the ball great.
Looks like Maurice Braden got the last laugh this week - he featured in the hilarious 'You've Been Framed' video in last weeks newsletter entitled 'Back Garden Golf Practice Ornament Destruction', and then this week he won the Tuesday Social by 4 shots with 23 points proving that his practice paid off!!
Maurice Braden 23 points £17
Sam Harvey 19 points £14
Matt Aldred 19 points £12
Gary Murphy 19 points £10
Dave Parr 18 points £9
You may be able to learn from what we worked on. He was hitting thin shots, pulls and slices which are common shots and the cure is completely the opposite than everybody expects.
The fault arises as the club travels too level in the downswing, like a baseball swing and the club is travelling on a very flat, very in-to-out direction, so much so that the golfer then needs to swing the club sharply down and out-to-in on the latter half of the downswing to reach the ball, causing a slice. We call this a 'Shallow slice'. Most golfers will try to swing the club more from the inside to correct the slice but this merely gets the club face more open creating even worse shots.
The cure?
There needs to be significantly more vertical arm action in the downswing, like a vertical chopping action which ironically will feel to the golfer as though they are swinging the club over the top and steep into the ground. They will feel as though they might slice the ball more, but a draw or a straight shot will be the result.
How much practice does this take? 3 shots, that's all. What does take some getting used to, and this is often the case, is that the route to great golf shots is so relatively easy to accomplish. I'll often witness a golfer hitting a series of fantastic shots after a minor swing alteration, but because it FEELS like a dramatically different move, the golfer often says "This is going to take me some practice to do", to which the reply is "Why?. You're already doing it!".
In reality, some golfers can accept a big change in feel and result quite easily, others need to feel they can groove it in more. This is quite natural and not reserved for golf swings so don't worry if it seems so easy to do that you worry it'll stop working just as quickly. As I always say - 'a lot of coaching is stopping people working on the wrong thing', so just keep working on the same thing and you'll get used to doing it right.
In Steve's case, he dropped three shots off his handicap on Saturday with the nett 63 but then lost the semi-final of the Bruton knockout on Sunday against the 'matchplay specialist' - Mark Ferguson in a tight tussle. So I don't know whether I'm in his good books or bad books?!

Powakaddy trolley promotion - From this Friday, buy a Powakaddy FW7 trolley and claim a FREE Powakaddy Sport cart bag direct from Powakaddy worth £120!
The FW7 is their flagship model and comes with the option of a super cool carbon finish at no extra cost. If you'd like to have a look at the trolley and see it in action, we have one in the Pro Shop. Both Motocaddy and Powakaddy have very similar models these days and have the same price points (£299, £349 and £399), all with 2 year warranties and all available with lithium batteries at approximately £150 extra. The FW7 model comes in at £399 or £549 with Lithium battery.
So, what's all the fuss about Lithium batteries? We sell approximately one lithium battery to every two standard (lead acid) battery these days. A lithium battery is much lighter, 2KG instead of 7.5KG and will charge in almost half the time of a lead acid battery. They also only replace the amount of charge that was taken out, I.e if you've played 9 holes, they'll only take 2 hours to reach full capacity again, whereas a lead acid battery will go through the full 9 hour charging cycle.
Important points for each battery type: A lead acid battery should be left on charge permanently, even when the green charged light is on, whereas a lithium battery should be taken off once it is fully charged. Lead acid batteries will gradually lose their charge if they are left off power, but a lithium could be used three weeks later and still be fully charged.
Okay, Lithium batteries are twice the price of lead acid but they last twice as long , have double the warranty and you get the lighter weight and easier charging ability during that time.
We sell three models, the Powakaddy and Motocaddy models which mould into the battery trays and the LitePower model which comes with different connectors for different trolley models. £199 gets you an 18 hole model with charger and £249 for a 36 hole version. They've been out for almost 5 years now and we've not had anybody requiring to replace a worn out one yet.
