It’s all about how we can learn from the golfers this week, with a huge variety of golfing events having taken place. I’ll try to include a seamless link from one to the next starting with the BMW Championship and ending in a family stood around a tree, so here we go!
|
Play to your strengths! Francesco Molinari wins the BMW at Wentworth and Justin Rose wins the Fort Worth Invitational, both displaying amazing consistency off the tee and into the green. The old adage of ‘Drive for show and putt for dough’ is only relevant if you’re a poor driver of the ball or a poor putter. For example, Justin’s rise up the world rankings and his US Open win at Merion reportedly coincided with his improvement from shots in the 190 - 230 range into greens, not his putting or short game. This weekend he won by four shots and led the PGA Tour stats for the most ‘Shots Gained’ against the field in the categories of tee-to green, approach shots to the green and proximity to the hole. Play to your strengths!

Another example of playing to your strengths, and equally impressive, was Brocton member Angela Byers who played nine holes on Tuesday night and scored 27 points shooting 42 gross! More impressive when you realise that we recently adjusted Angela’s golf kit and completely removed woods and hybrids from her bag! She’s such a strong iron player that we added a #5 iron and she hits that further than most golfers hit a fairway wood. The competitors on the Tuesday Night Social were glad Angela hadn’t entered! |
The Tuesday Night Social had 63 participants again, odd that we have so often had the same number this year with different golfers. John Maddox won with 22 points on the back nine and gets the coveted reserved parking space this week, all the winners and prizes are here on the Facebook page. Facebook was where I first learnt about Brocton Hall’s win for a record 4th consecutive year in the Millennium Bowl, played at Kedleston Park this year. Well done to all the team members for bringing back the Trophy!

|
Another trophy played for recently amongst members was the Curry Cup which took place on Saturday at Brocton followed by some equally competitive socialising in memory of a young compatriot, Leon Callon, who lost his fight with cancer recently. Leon won in the end though as his parting golfing wish was to bring everyone together in great spirit for this annual event which raised £450 for cancer charities. Great spirit is what Phil Birch displayed on Tuesday as he scored a hole-in-one on the 9th, five days before he wished he’d done the same feat on Presidents Day and won the £500 hole in one pot! You’ll just have to do it again Phil - consistency is what custom fitted clubs are all about!
|
Custom fitted clubs from Brocton Hall are also for Major Champions as Paul Broadhurst won his second Seniors Major by winning the Kitchenaid Seniors PGA Championship on the Champions Tour on Sunday. After a one over par first round, he finished off with 66, 64 and 63 to win by four shots and bag nearly half a million pounds. Paul’s been bringing his clubs to us over the last few seasons to get them tweaked and whilst I know it’s a little bit shallow to claim any responsibility and mention it just because he’s now won, it’s also kind of cool from our perspective! |
|
Depending on your perspective, you may prefer firmer ground conditions, or more sand-filled bunkers compared to someone else and each to their own seems right in this respect. On a recent annual trip to Siloth-on Solway, the dry, firm conditions produced an amazing statistic - the leaderboard was in direct contrast to the driving distance achieved by the competitors. The shortest hitter won and this continued right to the last placed golfer who was the longest hitter. Course conditions and set up rarely favour everyone. Course conditions and set up were points of discussion as the Course Committee left the boardroom and treaded the fairways to discuss various elements for future planning last week and included drainage, hole designs, tree conditions and bunker sand.
|
|
Bunker sand, or lack thereof, is often mentioned and whilst we will be adding more sand, I often witness many golfers who don’t have the strength or speed to play from deeper sand. Most golfers who I see for bunker lessons are playing the shots in a way that they have been led to believe is the right way, yet they aren’t having much success. Do any or all of these key points sound familiar to you? - Open the club face at address
- Aim your feet left of the target
- Swing out -to-in through the sand
- Follow through fully
They do? This may be correct for fluffy, deep bunkers but there is little if any control to be gained from this kind of sand and many golfers wouldn’t possess the right wedge or enough club head speed to extricate the ball from this sand. For many good bunkers around the country and for Brocton’s traps, do the opposite: - Leave the club face square at address
- Aim your feet right of the target
- Swing in-to-in through the sand
- Swing short through.
|
Try it and see - your shots will come with more predictability even if the lie is less forgiving than perfect.
A perfect and unique present for Father’s Day is a sleeve of Titleist ProV1 balls with ‘HAPPY FATHERS DAY’ stamped on them. I have 16 sleeves of 3 balls available to buy and these are a special gift from my Mum who commissioned them to be made, with the intention of all the proceeds to go and help our junior section with their golf funding. |
|
My Dad passed away 10 years ago and my Mum has made this generous token on his behalf as he was a very keen golfer at Glen Gorse Golf Club in Oadby, Leicester for many years and was handicap chairman for a decade there. We planted a tree in his memory by the 17th fairway a decade ago as a hole-defining oak had blown down from there. Here’s a picture of me with my Mum, Sister and older Brother by the tree last weekend. The balls are for sale at the normal price of £12 a sleeve - please let me know if you’d like to reserve any of them and let’s raise over £190 for our juniors section. Well, those seamless links were seamless. The only thing left for me to mention is to wish the President and the Lady President a good day for each of their events coming up.

When it comes to purchasing golf equipment there are many factors that you need to take into consideration. One such factor is your shopping destination, so here are just a few reasons why we should be your number one stop for all things golf. |
There’s only one choice Unlike buying blind from the internet and hoping the specs you choose match up and nothing goes wrong, here in the shop you can test a vast range of products and see all the stats for yourself to help you make an informed purchase that you can have total confidence in. It's our custom fitting ethos that really separates us from buying elsewhere, which is something you really should take advantage of. | |

Two of the latest iron models that are proving very popular with our members are the Mizuno MP-18 MMC and JPX900 Hot Metal. The former offers a multi-metal construction with both lightweight titanium and heavier tungsten for forgiveness in a more compact profile, while the latter combines a distance enhancing face with a larger profile that aids off-centre forgiveness. |
