Welcome to this weeks newsletter which comes to you from one of (if no the) best looking golf courses in the area. |
Presidents Day What a glorious day for Presidents Day and a perfectly set up course resulting in a mix of ages, handicaps and styles in the shake up for the prizes. The green staff always seem to manage to get the course into it’s best shape of the year for Presidents weekend and it lasts now until October, so get your diary sorted, invite your friends, diarise the charity am-am, the pro-am, Captains Day, ladies Invitation day and all the other big events - It’s too good of a course to not spend as long as you can playing on it when it’s so good. |
Thanks to the President, Mike Haynes, for a great weekend and well done to Bill Stewart who won with 40 points. Looking at the individual scores there were some great front nines recorded, I wonder how much of the poorer back nines are due to golfers considering the possibility of winning? Jake Sheldon was 1 under par after nine holes, Billy Mackie was 3 under at this point and Will Johnson was 3 under after just four holes! |

Winter Knockout Final Golf, as we know is a fickle game and Bill Stewart was brought back to earth the next day as Ian Partington and John Maddox beat Bill and Steve Hood in the final of the Winter Knockout. Surely the most Summer Winter knockout final ever!? |

Tuesday Social The Tuesday social was won by Josh Nesbitt this week with 21 points, 59 golfers took part and enjoyed the best part of the day. Other scores are on the Tuesday Social Facebook page.

US Open Qualifier I had a great motivating day on Monday as Mike and I left at 5am and went to Walton Heath to walk the fairways and watch the European Tour US Open Qualifier. It’s a great day as it’s free to watch, free to park, they play 36 holes and theres probably a maximum of 1000 people watching with no restrictions on where to walk or stand. Lots of the golfers had just finished the Italian Open hours earlier and some in form players were at Walton Heath including Westwood, Rock and the winner Thorbjorn Oleson. Motivation comes in two forms on these days - being impressed at some of the shots they hit but more often being amazed at how they are such successful golfers with how bad some of the shots are. |
|
- The first hole we came across was a par 3, both golfers bogeyed it, with Marc Warren a short range 3-putt.
- Next we went to the chipping green, Paul Dunne threw some balls in the bunker and shanked the first one out, knocking it through Robert Rock’s legs!
- Thomas Pieters strolls to the first tee carrying a pencil bag.
- Padraig Harrington arrives to hit some putts in his shorts.
- ‘Beef’ Andrew Johnston almost shanks his tee shot out of bounds on the par 3 1st hole but goes on to win the day shooting 10 under par!
- Rob Rock tees off next and hits it worse than Beef, leaving himself 50 yards in for his 2nd shot on a par 3, but makes par.
- A caddie asks their pro if they need some paracetamol on the 2nd tee - a by product of finishing top 10 in Italy hours earlier?
- We could have run off with a few tour bags as the caddies leave the bags by the next tee, as opposed to taking them to the green like they do in regular tour events.
- Lots of people were taking their dogs around the course to watch.
- Thomas Aiken was using Miura irons
- Every golfer had a total mixture of brands in their bags as the days of exclusive contracts are over. - Spanish golfer Elvira hits a provisional ball off the tee on four consecutive holes and finishes 1 under par for those holes!
- Thorbjorn Oleson was seriously impressive, hitting towering arrows but then duffs a wedge on the 17th, chunks a lob shot into the bunker, only just manages to escape and makes a double bogey and narrowly qualifies in last place.
- Lee Westwood was less than enamoured with his golf and virtually overtakes his divots as he walks after the ball.
- 31 players out of 120 retire before the end including Austin Connelly who bogeys the first in the afternoon and walks off. He was four under par after 13 holes in the morning as well.

We’re sure the majority of you will agree that having a distance device on the course is a huge benefit, going hand-in-hand with knowing how far you hit each club. For those of you in the market for a laser rangefinder or GPS device, here are a few options within Garmin’s range to suit different preferences. |
Pinpoint laser accuracy There's one standout feature to Garmin's Z80 laser rangefinder that sets it apart from all others on the market. As well as giving precise distances up to 350 yards away, the Z80 also includes hole maps that are integrated into the viewfinder, which display the shape of the hole and provide front and back distances when you lock on to the flag. |
|
Information at a glance If you prefer wearable technology, Garmin has both GPS watches and bands to suit all styles. The Approach S60 watch, seen here on the left, boasts colour hole maps, hazard information and offers front, middle and back yardages. The other, the Approach X40 band, is a slim, lightweight and waterproof wristband that gives you distances to the green and to hazards, as well as heart rate and activity tracking. |
