Greetings from Nevil Bland
Brocton Hall Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

Here’s a couple of dates for your diary - Wednesday 17th and Saturday 20th September.

On Wednesday 17th September and Saturday 20th September, my Pro’s Days for Ladies and Gents respectively are taking place and then on the Saturday night I’ll be hosting a presentation and party night with entertainment and buffet - (no it’s not a mass Ice Bucket Challenge!). Everyone is welcome even if you’ve not managed to play in the events. Dress will be smart casual and it promises to be a great night – it’ll be great to see you all there. More details very soon.

I might change the title of the Brocton Hall Midland PGA Pro–Am to the ‘Paul Broadhurst Challenge’, the challenge being to beat him. That’s right, he won again in the 9th year of the Pro Am last week shooting 4 under par 65 and finishing 2 clear of a trio of golfers including another Ryder Cup hero, David Gilford to lift the first prize of £850. When Paul first won the event in 2009 he referred to Brocton as a great ’thinking man’s golf course’ and this year commented how he played here in a Midland Boys tournament ‘xxx' number of years ago!

His team including Brocton Club Champion Mike Dewsbury (who shot 2 under par on his own and would have been second as a pro) were pipped on local rule with Matt Southwell’s team from The Chase, Brian, Tony Luo and Phil Musker also shooting 19 under par.

The day went very smoothly and the atmosphere is great. One of the teams told me that he had played his home Pro Am and another renowned course in the past 3 weeks in Pro Ams and Brocton’s was by far the best atmosphere. That’s nice to hear, and my life is made easier as the organiser of the event by the professionalism displayed by other departments of the club with help from the office before the day, the green staff preparing a great test of golf, the bar managing the flow of people and the caterers catering for lots of catering! Justyn was in before me at 6am and was still there as I left late at night – the kitchen staff certainly do put some effort in, which you often won’t notice. The cleaners even came in earlier than usual at 5am to get done before the first competitors arrived.

Lots of the professionals bring their own teams as they regard Brocton Hall as a great ‘treat’ for their supporters and we also have one of the largest prize tables in the Midlands with £3200 of amateur prizes. A big thank you from me as the organiser to all of the helpers, sponsors, competitors and to the members of Brocton Hall for allowing the event to be played. John Perkin in particular was phenomenal as the lone ball spotter on the 1st hole remaining there from the first ball at 8am to the last group at 3pm. Thanks John, huge effort!

Lady Captain Val Keeling had organised the halfway house for me and my thanks to Val, Amanda Horne, Trish Sandy, Gill Bloxham, Christine Davies and Diane Alder – everyone appreciated the food and drinks and the happy service!

The list of sponsors this year were:

And it was in support of the Birmingham Childrens Hospital and the Meningitis Trust.

Some dates for your diary for members and non-members:-

After 12 years I’ve finally managed to win my match with the Captain, away at Beau Desert although unfortunately the rest of the team didn’t fare so well as we lost 7.5 – 2.5.

I’ve finally figured out how to play the tricky course – 4 or 5 iron off most tees and a Captain who holes a crucial slippery 8 footer on the 17th to leave us 1 up on the last tee. A win looked unlikely as we were 3 down with 7 holes to play. Beau’s pro, Barrie Stevens, just missed the similar length putt on the last to halve the match – phew!

I now know how Tiger Woods feels this week – not from shooting 65 but from turning over a new leaf and getting a monkey off your back! His monkey in question is Sean Foley as he announced this week that he’s parting with Sean as his coach. Was it 2 weeks ago that I rumoured he was going to Butch Harmon or Jim Hardy/Chris O'Connell?

Here’s a photo of my phone hours after the announcement from the Woods camp – maybe I should have answered it!?

Actually, whilst I’m on the subject of my phone – please be aware that I often use it to send messages out but I hardly ever answer phone calls as I’m usually with a pupil or customer and I often don’t get messages or voicemails until the evening as the reception can be dreadful. If you have an urgent message for the Pro Shop, the direct number is 01785 661485. It’s a feature of modern communications that I get daily messages on the phone, through the post, e-mail, Twitter, Facebook and text message and often section a portion of time away from work to read them.

Brocton Hall Choir – message from choir member Nora Jeffers:

"On Sunday 10th August Brocton Hall Choir put on a performance at Camoys Court Residential Home in Stoke on Trent.

The residents all have their own flats and meet up for various activities , we were quite nervous with our performance as they seem to have a full calendar of activities, going or doing something different every day but we needn’t have worried as we were very warmly received.

We started the concert singing four songs with a summer time theme, then we went into “Last Night at the Proms” music to include a War time Medley commemorating the100 years since the beginning of the First World War. The audience loved it and sang along especially to Rule Britannia and Jerusalem.

A very enjoyable time was had by all. We stayed for tea and biscuits and chatted with everyone, we have been invited back and also to their sister home in Stone. The afternoon was tinged with some sadness as it was the last time Mike Durnell our choir master was to be with us as he has a new job and is moving on to pastures new. However we have a new choir master and the choir will reconvene on Tuesday 2nd September at the new time of 8.00 pm and we would welcome any new members who would like to join us."

Well done to Fern Clark who won the Ladies 36 hole Club Championship last week shooting 75, 76 to win by 11 shots. On the same day Emma Greatrex won the 18 hole medal by 20 shots (20 shots!!) with her 87 nett 53! Emma was 3 over gross after 7 holes off 34 handicap and eventually finished the day playing off 26 – I’m sure 8 1/2 shot handicap reduction is a record for one round!

The Scratch team are top of the league after an away win at the weekend and another junior member on form, Jake Sheldon, won in his debut for the team.
