The one that got away! It’s a tale of "The one that got away” this week - and I’m not talking about my drive on the 6th hole of the Tuesday Social that I lost in the middle of the sparse trees on the left where there isn’t even any rough! Some shots at the moment can just keep running away until they hit something and of course it’s the same everywhere this year as the courses are so dry, but Brocton plays beautifully when it’s like this. The greens are holding a good shot and Harry Vardon’s intelligent design rewards high shots and low shots alike into most greens. Here’s a couple of pictures from other courses I played last week, Ladbrook Park in Solihull where we played the EH Smith Midland Masters and Beau Desert where we played the first leg of the home and away matches.

The Captain’s team have never won the away match at Beau and this was part of Roger’s AGM hopeful prediction. His goal was to win every Captain Pro match, the Millennium Bowl, the Away Beau Desert match and the Dartmouth Bowl against South Staffs. The pressure providing prediction played out perfectly, right up until their pro, Barrie Stevens, couldn’t play the Beau match and their Captain, Malcolm, enrolled Mike Brown playing off 15 to take Barrie’s place. A nett eagle on the 1st hole was just the starter and the Captain and I were 6 under par better ball as Mike closed the match out with a 50 yard pitch in on the 15th hole. We lost the historic match by 1 point, but at least we got to play Beau at it’s most playable with plenty of run and slower greens than normal - a good by-product of a dry summer. Another one that got away! |
Yet another one that got away was the Claret Jug for Jordan Spieth, Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy who all could have, would have, should have been in a playoff at Carnoustie. Whatever you feel about Tiger Woods with his soap opera personal life, his golf life would make an amazing movie but I do feel theres one chapter still to be written and this could have been it. I’ll be amazed if he doesn’t win another Major tournament from now on. Francesco Molinari was a very deserved and popular winner and no doubt he too has more Major wins in him. The Sweep results are available in the Pro Shop. Next year, The Open will be the final major of the year which is going to be strange. Before then, we’ll have the USPGA Championship sweep up and running shortly. |

Our Midland PGA Pro Am is taking place on Friday 17th August. If you’re not playing, would you like to volunteer to help in this 15th anniversary event? We provide free refreshments from the halfway house which needs handing out and ball spotters on the first hole always help to get everyone off on time. Please click here if you’re available to help. The Tuesday Social was popular again this week with 56 competitors and the scoring was the best of the year. Mike Dewsbury had 4 birdies in 9 holes but Alan ‘Bubba’ Birch took the honours with a stunning 23 points which included an eagle 2 on the 18th after driving the green - nice one Bubba! Results are on the Facebook page here.

Are you the type of golfer who considers the danger ahead of you and plans accordingly, or do you pull a driver from the bag on every par-4 and par-5 without a blink? If you’re the latter then you need to read on. |
Consider the danger You hear pros talk a lot about the ‘smart shot’ in their post-round interviews. If you’re on the tee and there’s a bunker, ditch or other hazard around the distance that your driver or fairway wood normally flies, then make sure you change club to one that takes the trouble out of play, as displayed in this graphic. While you’ll have a slightly longer shot to the green, you’ll greatly reduce the chance of a big number. | |
|
Know your numbers Of course, key to all of this is knowing how far each of your woods carries. If you’re looking to add more distance and control to your game, come and test the Srixon Z 565 driver, Z F65 fairway and Z H65 hybrid. If you have a fitting we can hit all three in a range of different specifications until we find your ideal set-up for the course. |
