Welcome to another edition of our newsletter, in this week’s mail we highlight an impressive feat by one of our members, I show you pictures of the course five weeks apart, Professional’s Day is just around the corner, and there is lots to look forward to for the winter season. Enjoy the read!

Are you part of the hole in one club?

According to betting websites, the odds of getting a hole-in-one at this game are 2,500 to 1 if you’re a Tour Pro, increasing to 5,000 to 1 if you’re a scratch golfer and 12,500 to 1 for everyone else. Don Gillam at 89 years young scored his 13th hole in one last week at Brocton, slotting it at the 3rd hole!! An impressive feat indeed.

Consider the number's here - with Brocton only having three par 3s, that would take 4166 rounds of golf to partake in the 12,500 attempts. If a golfer played twice a week, every single week, it should take them 40 years to achieve an ace, so odds on it should have taken Don 520 years to achieve 13 aces playing twice every week. Remind me never to tell you you’re hitting the wrong club on a par 3 Don!!

Five weeks apart!

The course has recovered remarkably in the space of a couple of weeks. It’s hard to appreciate how hot it was day-after-day now, most courses in the area ended up closing on Sunday as it rained all day with temperatures in the single figures. Below are some pictures I took of the course five weeks ago and this weekend at the same time in the morning:

The Greenstaff are hollow-tining the greens during the week commencing 3rd September. If the conditions are favourable they will all be back in play by Thursday and usually regain their smooth surface within two weeks. Of course conditions and time dictate how well this process goes so please give the green staff full priority on the course for the Course Maintenance week, in an ideal world we’d leave the course empty for them on the Monday and Tuesday during normal working hours.

Professional’s Day

Following course maintenance week we have my Professional’s Day competitions for Ladies on the Wednesday and for men on the Saturday. Both will be the popular Texas scramble format with prizes on the course and refreshments in the halfway house. For the men’s event we’ll be teeing off in front of the dining room, playing a short wedge shot over the lake to the 9th green for the 1st hole. Then when golfers get round to the 9th tee they’ll be playing from there, cross-country over to the 10th green and yes, the woods will be out-of-bounds, you’ll have to play right of the 9th green and back up the 10th fairway. We’re also planning on playing the 12th hole as a par 5 from the dining room side of the lake as well as using the original tee on the 17th hole - near the putting green. Don’t worry we’ll be supplying some used golf balls for the risky shots!!

The winter season is a long way away but there’s already lots to look forward to...

Setting your sights

How many times do you find yourself lining up your shot and thinking "this is about an 8-iron from here to the pin", only to find that you end up 10-15 yards short of the hole? Being able to utilise accurate yardages is a key step to taking your game to the next level, which is why we'd recommend using a GPS device to ensure you always know exactly how far you have left to the pin.
