Tuesday's social golf was one of the busiest of the year despite the course maintenance taking place. 33 golfers played, which were just about the only golfers we saw all day and we had a number of competitors who have never played in it before.
1st Ian Thwaites 19 points £16
2nd Shaun Nelson 19 points £14
3rd Bob Jackson 18 points £11
4th Tied Daz Poole 18 points £8.50 each
4th Tied Graham Denny
6th Nigel Metcalfe 18 points £7
There will still be social golf on next Tuesday from 4-6pm tee off and for at least another 2 weeks until the light beats us.
Well done to junior member Ethan Evans who won his division in the September medal on Saturday with a nett 66 which included dropping 7 shots in 2 holes. Speaking of dropping, his handicap has come down by three! I'm surprised that more juniors don't play in the adult completions. Ethan also played in the Tuesday social this week. Well done Ethan, get your name on the 'Wall of Success' in the shop next time you're up.
Don Gillam won division 2 with a 67 and Andrew Nickless won with a 65 in division 1.
Head Greenkeeper, Andy Fellowes and his team of Rich, Gary, Lee, Ian and Liam have done a great job with the course maintenance hollow tining and top dressing programme whilst also ensuring the rest of the course is tidy. Thanks for allowing them the priority on the course to get this essential work completed.
I played the magnificent Parkstone golf club in Dorset at the weekend and they had hollow-tined 2 weeks ago. The greens were smooth again and just a little slower than they would have been and it goes to show how important this process is. Conducting the work at this time of year ensures the root growth is deeper and the grass healthier as we approach the winter. Time to get your lawn done too although don't let gardening affect your golf swing!
When it comes to your golf swing - try not to waste any practice time you have - I can often be heard stating that 'A lot of effective golf coaching is trying to stop golfers working on the wrong thing'.
It's such a game of opposites that very often something that would seem to make sense to improve your shots would actually have the opposite effect.
If you are hooking the ball, for example, and spend time practicing but then when you next play you find that you are no longer hooking the ball but pushing it to the right instead, it's actually the same shot. Likewise if you were catching the ball thin or your divots were nonexistent or pointing to the right, it's still the same shot. You've not managed to change your impact position, merely uncovered one of the corresponding ball flights caused by the same impact condition as the hook.
Change your impact and you'll change your shots.
