Let’s talk spin…
I was talking about wedge spin and wedge shots last week - here’s a good example from a fitting during the weekend of how a clubhead can affect the playing of the game. |
A good junior player came to pick up their Cleveland RTX4 wedges which consisted of three different lofts and sole designs. This gives them three different options for yardages and three different options for varying conditions and surfaces. They hit half a dozen shots with each wedge and you can see from this picture that the surface of the faces is so fresh and rough that the ball leaves a white mark. It looks as though they’ve only hit one shot with each club but I can promise you that there are half a dozen shots on each wedge here. The clubhead on the left shows the strike marks lower to the sole which is the high bounce wedge - this makes the clubhead sit higher off the turf, the ball impacts lower on the face and imparts more spin on the ball. The club head on the right is the low bounce model and the head sits tighter to the ground, the ball hits higher on the face and the ball flies higher with less spin. So here’s the lesson - surface roughness and strike point location have more effect on backspin than the grooves do. |

We had a visit from a few professionals this week at Brocton Hall who were seeking adjustments to their clubs.
A Midlands PGA Pro came for a full bag fitting to get ready for their new season of tournaments.
A touring Pro from the North Region came to have some new wedges and driver, plus some re-grips before setting off to play the Sunshine Circuit in South Africa.
An ex-European Tour Pro came over from Italy to get their clubs rebuilt and tweaked and to learn some elements of club-fitting as they take up the Elite team coach role at Edoardo Molinari’s new Golf Academy near Turin. It’s a very impressive set-up with no expense spared, find out more here. The caddie of LPGA Tour player Charley Hull brought her new clubs over to be fine-tuned. She was having a new driver shaft installed and new irons and wedges as the faces were getting worn out on her current set - I think they’ve paid for themselves though with career earnings of nearly 3 million dollars!!

Retail trends…
There has been much made in the news lately about the slow-down in retail terms in the run up to Christmas, lots of high street brands losing out to the internet was the first news, but then some established online retailers were also reporting a downturn.
The businesses which are bucking this trend are the ones offering an experiential element to retail which is what we strive to do at Brocton Hall. A sports store brand are installing gyms in their shops, another one are fitting climbing walls in-store and crazy golf can be found in the House of Fraser and of course coffee shops are more about the social element of coffee rather than just a place to drink hot flavoured water.
I always link the golf club into my social media posts and every time someone comes to visit us from outside the club and receives a unique and notable experience, it’s a tick in the golf clubs marketing and promotional box and the effects can be traced throughout the year. The Pro-Am gets full every year, we see a gradual increase in the number of full green fee payers, the membership remains full and our own database gets larger and larger. Of course as a member you have the benefit of these facilities right on your doorstep with no fitting fees.

Far far away, behind the word mountains, far from the For the golf retail departments which have taken a nose-dive globally in recent years, we have our website www.foremostgolf.com to offer a greater range of products than we could possibly hold in-store. For example, waterproofs are sold less nowadays as golfers layer up for warmth and just use waterproofs for playing in the rain and golf bags are not so popular as they last a long time and the trolley manufacturers offer free ones with promotions annually. Large stocks of these would tie up cashflow and space yet there are 171 golf bag options on the website right now. |

Here’s a good use of our seating area this week as two of our members celebrated their win on the course with coffee and minced pies! |
A phenomenal effort... My assistant Mike, and Bill Whittle produced a phenomenal effort over the weekend as they took part in a 24HR sponsored CrossFit event for charity. They were part of a team of six in this worldwide event and finished a phenomenal 28th place in the world. To qualify, each team were tasked with doing a different exercise every hour and had to do 500 repetitions between them every hour. What Mike and Bill didn’t know was that the other four team members were intending to push as hard as they could to get up the ranking and they ended up doing up to 2,000 reps per hour. We reckon that they each did upwards of 75,000 exercises, moved over 35 kilometres during the day and burned over 13,000 calories each!! I can testify that next day, moving any part of the body appeared to be a major issue. |

Course update…
The 1st hole was turned into a par 3 for a time this week as a large tree came down on the right hand side of the fairway. We were scheduled to have it removed soon so it’s happily saved us that expense too!
|
All that’s left for me to say is we hope you all have a great Christmas and New Year, with as much golf as you can cram in and I’ll be back on the 7th January and remember - it’s all new Rules of Golf by then!!
