You may not see some of the new models in the shop as they are in my demo stock in the studio. For anyone that remembers playing with wooden woods and smaller headed metal woods, you may also remember the way that we used to have to hit those drivers. Everyone used to have two ways of playing them. There was the standard full drive which would be the golfer’s normal yardage, let’s say it was 230 yards off the tee. Then there was the alternative drive aimed at simply knocking it down the fairway, whereby we used to shorten the swing and just chip it forwards at a shorter distance, 200 yards for example. These days no-one seems to need to play the shorter shot, the clubs are more forgiving and as 3 wood heads are also bigger, this is automatically the shorter option. Instead, if the standard drive is still 230 yards, the alternative drive these days is to ‘ramp it up’ and go for a bigger drive of, say, 260 yards. This couldn’t be attempted with the smaller heads as missing the centre of the face would result in disaster but these days, if you’re playing a wider hole, then go for it!
