Greetings from Nevil Bland
Brocton Hall Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

By now you must have read plenty about The Ryder Cup, here’s a different view from across the pond.

Tom Wishon is the only designer from the custom clubmaking side of the golf industry whose clubhead designs have been used to win on the PGA Tour, the Champions Senior Tour and in Ryder Cup competition. He has designed and custom built the golf clubs used in competition by Scott Verplank, Bruce Lietzke, Ben Crenshaw, as well as the last set of clubs played by Payne Stewart before his tragic accident in 1999.

Having begun his golf equipment career in 1972, Tom Wishon has designed over 300 original and innovative clubhead models, more than any other single person in the 500 year history of the game. His clubhead designs represent more than 50 different technology firsts and I’ve been using his drivers for nearly a decade. Tom played with me at Brocton 5 years ago after a PGA seminar at The Belfry and I keep in touch with him regularly. Here’s his take on The Ryder Cup:

"You know, it is getting downright depressing for those of us on this side of the pond with a great interest in the game to watch the Ryder Cup. 8 losses out of the past 10. I have to tell you that when I woke up Sunday and checked online on my iPad to see how the singles were going, once I could see we were not making up any ground and with most of our players still not playing very well, in all honesty I never turned on the TV to watch because I just didn’t want to see such poor play on our part again.

And yet what is amazing is if you look at the US record in the President’s Cup, it is almost totally the opposite of how we play in the Ryder Cup. How does that happen?

I also think that it does no good to criticize and bash whoever is the US Captain for these losing teams. I hate this but that sort of reaction has become very typical because the disappointed fans and writers seem to always want to have a scapegoat to blame. Your side bashed Faldo pretty hard after your last loss in 2008, so it goes on for both sides. I mean really, in the end the Captain can’t play and win more points. Either his players get the job done or they don’t. I also am starting to think that after this many losses, it may very well be that some of our players are more easily intimidated when your players get off to a strong start in a match.

Of course at the end of the day this was like all the other losses for the US – your players simply hit more shots, made more putts and definitely deserved the win. As we all remember, it was when the US had racked up something like 10 wins in a row in the Ryder Cup back through the 60s, 70s and into the 80s that it was decided to allow your side to add the Europeans as a way to make the match more competitive. So maybe we need to write letters to the PGA of America to tell them to lobby for us adding on Australia to our side !!!! HA!! (Canada wouldn’t do it because they don’t have many top players yet!!)”

I also let him know that I had been nominated for the Foremost PGA Professional of the Year award which gets decided at the Golf Trade Show next week, with the BBC’s Andrew Cotter presenting the awards. Tom commented:

"Great to hear that you won the recognition from the Foremost Group!!! Very well done and I might add, very well deserved on your part!! You stand FAR ahead of your fellow PGA pros in your commitment to custom fitting. As a former PGA of America member from way back before I fell in love with equipment, I have always wished that more pros could see the benefits of proper fitting and do the same thing you have done.”

Sunday’s Pro’s fiddle attracted 47 golfers - mostly in the morning, there were only 4 people on the course in the gorgeous, sunny afternoon! Was there something on TV? Phil Musker had the round of his life, playing off 9 handicap, he was 4 under gross after 10 holes(!) eventually finishing with 44 points to win by 6 shots. Great golfing Phil.

During my Pro’s Day evening I spoke about one of my pet hates, namely the inability for anyone to finish off a speech without saying ‘Have a safe journey home’!! Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m not against people getting home safe but we used to be able to finish speeches off without this generic offering – we don’t wish each other this as we leave the bar, or the gym, or just a game of golf!! Here’s the time line as I see it:

  • Late 1990’s – one guy kept winning the Midland Pro-ams and made the same speech every time, finishing off with ‘Have a safe journey home’.
  • Early 2000’s – Every pro-am winner began finishing their winning speech the same way.
  • Late 2000’s – Most other golf event speeches also now finished the same way
  • 2006 – Ian Woosnam finishes off the Ryder Cup closing ceremony with ‘Have a safe journey home’.
  • 2012 –Lord Sebastian Coe finishes off the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games ‘Have a safe journey home’.
  • And now, Paul McGinley used the same 5 words to end the Ryder Cup last week.

What next – the Queen’s Speech!?

Well done to the catering team at Brocton Hall last Friday. The Tapas night was attended by 115 people and the kitchen served over 1,100 dishes!! Phenomenal effort.

Upcoming dates for your diary – booking required:

  • Thursday October 16th – Srixon golf ball fitting day, conducted indoors in our studio, 15 minute appointments with a free glove if you buy a dozen of the recommended ball on the day.
  • Monday November 3rd – Mizuno fitting Demo Day – 30 minute appointments bookable in the Pro Shop.

The Captain and I played our penultimate match on Monday against Mark Wheatley and Al Dawes and eventually prevailed 3&2 in a match which was much closer than the result would show. This means we are unbeaten with just Mike Pascoe and the elusive Dave Parkes to track down to play. The last time I lost a match in the Captain/Pro series was in the summer of 2012!
