Welcome to another edition of our newsletter, in this week’s mail it is no coincidence why some of our juniors have low handicaps, we talk hitting the middle of the clubface, and we highlight a local rule. Enjoy the read!

It’s no coincidence… Mike was away at The Belfry last week and has successfully completed his 2nd year of training of the PGA diploma programme. The weekend junior coaching that Mike hosts has been popular and he certainly has a great attitude with coaching and in general with the kids, and it is great to see golfers progressing at the game from as young as 6 years old. |
Those juniors who are members and have handicaps, don’t forget that as the weather gets better and the days get longer, you can take lessons or simply play or practice at the golf club most days. Recalling my junior days, I often find it strange that our juniors mainly turn up to play competitions and not to just ‘play for fun’. Along with a dozen other juniors, I used to live at the golf club and 6 of us turned professional and this was with restricted tee times and no junior coaching. Mike and I are available for individual lessons and we have golf balls that you can borrow to practice with. It’s no coincidence that the lowest handicap juniors can often be found hanging around the putting green and short game area.

Ladies coaching… Myself and Mike are also available for group coaching, in particular ladies beginner coaching and we have a number of ladies wishing to get more involved in the game with limited experience. If you know of any lady wishing it have a go, let me know and we’ll try to get a group who can make a similar day of the week. Contact us here for any coaching requests.

Do you hit the middle? A phenomena that I’ve come across a lot recently during driver fittings is the performance of the ball on mis-hit shots. It’s not uncommon with the modern drivers for the golfer’s longest drives to occur when they DON’T hit a perfect shot and they still find the fairway! I know that sounds strange but it’s the area where driver technology has really helped in recent models, off-centre hit performance. It’s all to do with the backspin imparted on the ball. The purpose of backspin is to create lift and a golf ball will keep rising until the spin decays to such an extent that the ball then falls out the sky. Too much spin and the ball will rise too sharply and fall steeply, too little and the ball will rise too little and fall too soon. Just yesterday I had a three driver fittings and for example, where a golfers perfect drive launched at 12 degrees with backspin of 2,300 rpm giving they hit the ball 230 yards total distance. When they missed the centre of the face and hit higher up the face, or towards the toe, they would launch at 15 degrees with 1,800 rpm of spin causing the ball to launch higher, needing less spin to stay in the air and the golfer achieved 260 yards total distance. Now it might be nice to think that you could achieve the longer drive all the time but this would not be achievable with any consistency. It’s one of the ways a Tour Pro will try to hit a particularly long drive on occasion but it’s not achievable consistently due to the tiny margin for error, BUT as a mis-hit this is a win-win scenario. What I’ve also noticed is that the disastrous ‘low-on-the-heel’ isn’t anywhere near as bad with modern drivers - this strike used to produce as many rpm’s as a Ferrari but not anymore!

Local rules … Please take a minute to cast your eye over the Local rules board in the clubhouse as they have changed slightly to account for the new rules of golf. Every club it seems is behind with adjusting to the new rules of golf and some of the R&A recommendations have caused a lot of work. For example, Out-of-bounds used to be classed as ‘Beyond any hedge or fence’ but they now don’t recommend using a growing object as a boundary. Instead we should all have fences, walls or a line with posts all around the border - which is a LONG line!! At Brocton Hall, the boundaries are marked by white posts, a fence or barbed wire strung along the hedgerows and at times, by an imaginary line drawn between these points. You’ll also notice on the 13th hole that the OOB markers have moved 10 yards down the slope to allow a ball which has only just rolled into the woodland to be playable.

Sometimes it's not only their golfing ability that impresses us when watching the world's best on TV, but also the stylish clothing that they wear. Golfers, like Rafa Cabrera-Bello, always wear the latest golf-specific clothing to give them an edge on the course, as you can see below. |
| Rafa Cabrera-Bello | FootJoy clothing
|
|
FootJoy's latest collection for spring/summer '19 oozes style and is, without doubt, one of their best clothing ranges to date. The main thing we love this year is FootJoy's combination of striking colours and block designs, enabling them to create a fashionable range that wouldn't look out of place off the course.
You too can dress like Rafa by popping into the shop and taking a look at the full FootJoy collection in-store. |
