The golfing world is.... I Googled synonyms for the word ‘Change’ this week and came up with many completely opposing options. I got results including 'remodel', 'revolutionise', 'modify' and 'innovation', to less positive alternatives such as 'deform', 'mutate', 'distort' and 'transmutate'! So, depending on your view, we are all about either transmutation or innovation in the golf world this week as change is happening all around us at a fast rate. However I don’t agree that ‘Change is inevitable’, because it takes people with endeavour to make a change. That’s what Augusta National did last week as they introduced the fantastic Amateur Women’s Championship, won by the World no. 1 amateur Jennifer Kupcho who was 5 under par for the last 6 holes. The opposing view here would be that it distracted from the Women’s first professional Major Championship, the ANA Inspiration.
In the same vein it’s not great to see little kids spending a whole minute to hit a putt in the Drive, Chip and Putt event at Augusta but it is great to see this kind of initiative taking place and golf becoming centre stage. The winner of The Masters traditionally travels with the green jacket to New York and appears on the Jimmy Fallon show, and for the ladies event, Jennifer and the runner-up of the amateur version did exactly the same. Hugh Jackman and the runner up of a women’s amateur golf competition appearing on the same chat show - that’s got to be good for the game? |
