These thoughts were circling round my mind as I raced towards the course on my bike as a 16 year old, shortly after leaving school for the weekend in the middle of my A-Levels. Minutes earlier, the Pro at Glen Gorse, Bob Larratt, had found me on the practice ground with the news of an assistant pro’s job going at The Leicestershire and without a seconds thought, my bicycle clips were on and I was hurtling down the A6 towards Evington. Having secured the job, I now sat in my room at home considering how best to tell my parents that I was due to start work in 48 hour’s time and oh, by the way "I’ve just quit my A Levels.” Realising the gravity of my decision, I took stock and wrote a list of pros and cons about taking the role. The cons column was huge and realistic, the pros column was very short and optimistic. As I looked at the two columns the answer was clear… “Nah, sod it, let’s have a go!”. The story came full circle last month as I joined the Captain, Steve Metcalfe, on a visit to The Leicestershire and we were greeted by the incumbent Assistant Pro, none other than European Tour player Kym Larratt - the daughter of the Pro who got me the job! You can sign up for the day by cash or cheque in the Pro Shop with either the 36 hole day costing £75 including coach, breakfast, lunch, dinner and prizes or just the afternoon round costing £45.
