Welcome to another edition of our newsletter, in this week’s mail we take a look at the enigma that is Brooks Koepka, Pete has a major win in the Seniors Club Championship, and I report back from the British Golf Show. Enjoy the read!

What an enigma Brooks Koepka is!

He could be one of many things:

1. One of the best players to ever play the game?
2. Someone who happens to have played his best golf on the right weeks?
3. A Bomber who will always demolish a course as long as he hits the fairways?
4. One of a new breed of athletes coming into the sport at the Pro level?

It seems that because we don’t see him a lot in other tournaments and because he keeps himself to himself, the general public don’t put him on a pedestal. But the truth is that he learnt his craft travelling on a budget and playing for peanuts on the Challenge Tour.

In answer to points 2 and 3, he’s openly spoken about the fact he will beat 95% of the field in a Major because so many of his compatriots will play poorly under pressure, or try too hard, or be put off by his aggressive play. And in answer to him being a Bomber - he plays with a fade which is the most consistent swing for a long hitter. The sweep results are in the Pro Shop and the majors are coming thick and fast now with the US Open at Pebble Beach just three weeks away.

The opposite of Brooks...

Brocton Hall member and ex-Captain Peter Frisby would be the opposite of Brooks, he’s won plenty of competitions but never won a board comp in hundreds of attempts! So, I’m really happy for Pete who won the Seniors Club Championship with a nett 64 on Sunday, especially after having his unfair share of challenges recently. What a great advert for golf, to be out of action for a while, spend some time working on your game and getting your kit adjusted and then go out to win at this great game. Chuffed for you Pete!

Thanks for your Happy Birthday wishes last Friday. I’ll let you into a secret, I wasn’t aware it was my Birthday until mid-morning when I first looked at my phone and saw all the messages! Myself and Mike were attending the inaugural British Golf Show at Wycombe Air Park and we’ve been so busy lately that it was completely off the radar. The other reason is that some of you may be aware that I change my Birthday most years to suit me. Shock, horror and ‘You can’t do that!’ is most people’s reaction but I first did it when I was away at Sawgrass on my Birthday and I told the kids my Birthday was on the day I got back. They didn’t know any different and ever since then I’ll move it to a day that suits me better - for instance Lewis is up at Salford University and his message read ‘Happy Official Birthday Dad, if you’re moving it to next weekend, I’ll come back for it!’. Makes sense to me. In actual fact I’ve not aged this year as I’ve not had time to go out and celebrate so I think I’ll just leave it a year and remain at 45 for a while.

The British Golf Show was combined with the Elite London Show, an interesting mix of Lomborghinis, Aston Martins, helicopters, super yachts, Italian furniture, chandeliers and grand pianos! Myself and Mike were conducting fittings for Cleveland wedges and hand stamping them on site, it was really interesting to be involved in the same trade but with a completely different mix of people to usual - they would call us ’Northerners’.

I mentioned in previous newsletters that I’ve been fortunate enough to join forces with another clubfitter and together we have gained access to all the main brands, in component form and we can also get exclusive Tour Issue product and new launches for your benefit. Jonathan from Mitsubishi Chemical, the shaft manufacturer used by more than half of all Tour Pro’s, was with us and he had a demo of a new Tour graphite iron shaft. They make it three times thicker than normal, easily the size of a snooker cue and sand it down massively to get to the finished product.

Most overlooked club in the bag?

Thankfully, the penny has dropped when it comes to the importance of getting custom fitted for a new driver or set of irons. Unfortunately, we still see the vast majority of golfers overlook this process when it comes to their fairway woods, but why?

How often do you use yours?

“I wouldn’t use it often enough”
“It's too expensive”
“It's not necessary”

Yeah, I guess if you’re not concerned with shooting lower scores and maximising your potential then a custom fitted fairway wood isn’t that important.

However, if improving your game is something you want to achieve, then having a full set of custom fitted clubs is vital, especially when it comes to gapping between your driver and irons.
