What a week for weather! For the first time ever, nobody played the Tuesday social this week due to the constant rain. We were so lucky to be able to play the Invitation Day on Sunday in pretty good conditions after two solid days of rain on Friday and Saturday which then returned for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. We know the course needs some rain I suppose, let’s just hope it clears up for the Captains’ Days in a couple of weeks. |
I keep a daily record of the weather to historically analyse the effect on our business 'busy-ness’. Last year, Saturday just gone was the first of our days with temperatures over 30 degrees and we had 29 out of 35 days from then on with temperatures in the 30’s which burnt all the grass. Funny to think that this year we’re waiting for the course to get kick-started and start growing in earnest. The Lady Presidents Day was a popular event last week and the dining room was full in the evening as joint winners were announced as the scores of Di Ferriday and Lady Captain Trish Franklin couldn’t be separated! Well done to everyone involved in the day, here’s a picture from the presentation.

We’ve been busy throughout the bad weather utilising our various facilities with coaching, club-fitting and building of clubs for all sorts of golfers and Katie’s been busy with the embroidery machine, creating bespoke 125 year anniversary logo garments for members. 2019 is proving a stellar year for golf clubs with the development of very forgiving, quality clubs and new categories such as ‘Players distance Irons’, ‘Driving irons’, ‘Adjustable hybrids’ and greater options for shaft fitting and ladies specific models.

We’re continually updating our fitting matrix with new additions and this week I am adding two new options - a value driver and a unique iron shaft. Benross Golf provide the value option and they have specific 'offset' ladies and seniors models which is what made Cobra such a popular model a decade ago. The drivers retail for less than half the price of the main brands this year and because we build them from components we can use any shaft and grip we like. The new shaft in my matrix is a phenomenal product from Mitsubishi Chemical, currently the makers of the most used driver shafts on tour. Myself and Mike saw the raw product at the British Golf Show which is produced as thick as a snooker cue from tightly woven graphite and then sanded down to a third of it’s original diameter. The result is a shaft, called OTi, which fits into another category of equipment which is quickly gaining popularity - a heavier graphite shaft that feels as solid as steel. They’ll be in my shaft matrix by next week and we’ll have the 3 iron shaft in a demo driving iron for you to try.

Weather hasn’t been a problem at Pebble Beach as they’ve had perfect conditions for the build up to the US Open. Apparently the course is set up to favour the longer hitters and not necessarily the straightest, which is a myth when it comes to the traits needed to win. Just look at the driving accuracy ranking of the game’s most successful long hitters. Rory McIlroy leads the ‘Strokes Gained Driving’ stats yet he comes in at 144th in the accuracy ranking, hitting just 55% of fairways, meaning he wins tournament by virtue of his driving WITHOUT hitting that many fairways. Bubba Watson is 2nd in ‘Strokes Gained’ but 157th in accuracy and Dustin Johnson is 3rd in ‘Strokes Gained’ yet only 192nd in fairways hit. In contrast Jim Furyk hits the most fairways but sits all the way down at 120th in strokes gained through driving. My picks this week would be Webb Simpson to win on current form, Paul Casey to be the top European on his past consistency at Pebble Beach and Gary Woodland to be a solid top 5 performer due to his length and consistency.

Earn yourself some money It's always nice to get something for our old bits and bobs. Take your car for example, with many people now taking the opportunity to get money off a new car by part-exchanging their old car as part of the deal. Well, we're now running a brilliant offer with our friends at Motocaddy, which will see you get up to £60 back in cash (minimum return is £50) when you trade-in your old electric trolley whilst purchasing a new Motocaddy electric trolley in-store. |

If you’re an equipment junkie, there’s nothing quite like standing on the first tee clutching the latest driver – especially, with the marketing promise of faster ball speeds and greater distance firmly in your mind. The question is, should this be your number one priority with the big stick in hand? |
With the US Open taking place at Pebble Beach this week, one thing the world’s best will need in abundance is accuracy off the tee. Penal rough, fairway bunkers aplenty and the Pacific Ocean combine to create one of the hardest tests in golf. |
Introducing Srixon's Z 785 driver One driver that will be in golfers' bags at Pebble Beach is this beauty from Srixon. The Z 785 is the only driver in the brand's range for 2019, which says everything it needs to about the quality of this model. It boasts exceptional distance as well as great forgiveness, combining to create a driver that is suited to lots of different golfers. So, what are you waiting for? Come and have a chat to us in the shop and we can start you on your journey to better golf this summer. |
