Don’t forget to check your spikes as well – we often have to drill old spikes out as it’s surprising how worn they get during the drier months – now is the time to replace them.
The Nations Trophy was another resounding success on Saturday for the inhabitants of Brocton Hall, bringing new and established members together for a day of competitive golf, an evening of… Well, I’m afraid the rest of the days review is subject to ‘Tour Rules’, you’ll just have to be there next year to experience it. All I’ll say is everyone is still buzzing about it. Top marks to Anthony Dell for his organisation and his ‘Jools Holland’ style team introductions and to the more musical teams on the night! Thanks to my team of Dave Braddock, Richard Loveridge, Graham Southall, Steve Witton, Wayne Bailey, Roy Douglas and Graham Matthews for a top effort and a good evening.

I've been decorating at home lately and found one of my old sketch pads from 10 years ago, featuring paintings I was doing for a new yardage chart. Not much need now with the GPS devices!
I’m happy to say that I passed the test and Japanese manufacturer, Srixon, authorised me to be able to build their clubs from component form, one of only 5 people allowed to do so in the UK. They have begun to arrive this week and I’m now taking bookings for fittings for woods and irons with them.
We’ve recently also been allowed to open up a direct account with Garmin which gives us access to all their products including the popular GPS watches. The S2 is now their entry level watch and gives you yardages to the front, middle and back of the greens as well as to doglegs and key areas. They retail at £169 and we have a display model of each of the watches plus a continuos video showing the features and benefits of them all.
Titleist launch their much-anticipated new range of woods on November 14th and we’ll have demo models for you to try out. The fittings are conducted indoors on the FlightScope and it’s a great environment to trial new product.
I’ve recently had a couple of PING G30 drivers which I have made available as demo products and have been out on the course a few times lately. I stopped conducting my business like this a few years ago as it proves to be quite an ineffective way of selecting golf equipment. This point has been proved once again with the demo drivers as here’s the results from a recent demo.
- A golfer who has been using a custom fitted driver, made and bought from myself, took the PING G30 out for an on-course demo.
- They come back in raving about it after having a great game, but wondering how it would compare to their own driver.
- A few days later, they try out their own driver and the PING on the FlightScope in the Loft. Their own driver has a tighter dispersion but the PING is slightly longer.
- Takes the PING out on the course again, doesn’t play so well and wonders if the difference in the length of the shots of the two drivers is down to the length of the clubs.
- I re-shaft their own driver with an ACCRA Tour Issue shaft, 20 grams lighter and 1.25” longer to match the PING.
- They play with their own driver and hit it very well, but wonder how it compares to the PING again now it’s been lengthened?
- Hit more shots in the Loft on the FlightScope comparing the two and their own driver performs identically to the PING, albeit possessing a more efficient shaft for their swing and slightly straighter.
- The result – Re-shaft their own club with the longer, lighter ACCRA shaft, gaining club head speed and yardage .
This whole process has taken a long time, which isn’t a problem, but the same process in a fitting scenario would have been done and dusted in an hour and not everyone has the time for so may visits – and remember, this has just been for one club!
I’m not rubbishing PING here, the new woods certainly work very well, and I’m not rubbishing the golfer in question, he’s very consistent and a perfect model to test these clubs out on, it just goes to show how effective my fitting process is. The final stage of my fitting process often involves me making a club of the golfers exact specification for them to try out in real on-course situations, mainly for their self confidence.
Christmas Greetings and Eatings
Our popular Christmas night is coming up in a month’s time. From 2pm until 7pm on Thursday 27th November, we’ll be launching the Christmas season in the Pro Shop and Justin will have a special menu available for the night with some choices for you to tuck into. It’s something we’ve done since I first came to Brocton as I was aware that many of the members ‘other halves’ had never even seen the shop. I t’s great to see lots of you on the night, share a free drink on us and pick at your first Christmas chocolates of 2014! So, put the date in your diary and we’ll see you there.
