An interesting thought... Whilst I was away I could see what the weather was like by catching the odd glimpse of Wimbledon, which was always bathed in sun whenever I saw it. I find it slightly bizarre that the players so often celebrate winning a point in such an animated way, screaming at the crowd and pumping their fists - and not just the crucial points near the end. It made me wonder what they’d be like if there were no crowds at all. This happened with golf in the 2012 AT&T National when only a few dozen essential volunteers and scorers were allowed on the course. It was still covered by the TV but the players reactions were virtually the same as when there was a big crowd, in the main because it’s not seen as the done thing to celebrate wildly in your opponents face at golf. How strange then, that tennis is often the opposite and it does seem awkward sometimes when a losing opponent has to wait at the net whist the winning player finished their tour of fist pumping. Maybe it’s more down to the physical attributes needed for each game, tennis needs bursts of speed and energy whereas golf needs stability and rhythm but it would be interesting to see a top match with only a TV audience and see the differences.
