Ladies Pro’s Day
What an amazing last 5 days we were involved in last week which started on Wednesday as we hosted the Ladies Pro’s Day competition which was well supported and was great fun in the halfway house as we supplied the nibbles and drinks to the competitors. Many of you commented how nice it was to play a fun Texas Scramble format and the scoring was pretty good too. We even had a ’Nearest the Bin’ winner as well as a “Nearest the Pin”.

Friday the 13th…
On Friday Katie and I were having a very productive day until our computer that runs the till system decided to pack up. Almost simultaneously the coffee machine in the halfway house packed up and it was then that someone remarked that it was Friday 13th which we hadn’t realised until then. I may not believe in much that can’t be proven but I’m tempted to believe in that superstition now!!
|
Men’s Pro’s Day Saturday witnessed 140 golfers playing in the Men’s Pro’s Day which again was a Texas scramble with a difference as I redesigned some of the holes on the course, beginning with a cheeky little shot over the lake to the 9th green for the 1st hole. Thanks to everyone for playing and especially a big thank you as we raised nearly £200 for the Birmingham Children's Hospital at the Halfway House. Our 16yr old, Simon, enjoys running “Simon’s Snack Shack” and it’s great as a parent to see how you’ve all helped him blossom into a confident young man. |

The only issue we had was that the coin receiver in the coffee machine in the halfway house packed up as the first group came to the hut. Unbelievable! After a frantic hour I’d salvaged working parts from the machine in the shop and got the halfway house machine working so we could offer free coffees to competitors, phew! There is a good ending to this story - our coffee machine contract isn’t due for renewal until November and the machine in the halfway house is 6 years old, the one in the shop is 3 years old, but the upshot is that we will have new machines ahead of time, so we’ll have brand new machines in both locations by the time you read this newsletter. The new machine uses the same coins, offers decaf black and white coffee, pours double shots in one go and we’ve also negotiated a 20% larger drink. You’ll notice the new machines as they’re called the Starship Trooper of coffee machines - you’ll see why. |

Sunday drama!
Sunday continued unabated and I was engrossed watching the singles day of the Solheim Cup with the closest of all possible endings - what a thrilling spectacle it was as Bronte Law and Suzann Petterson holed putts within 20 seconds of each other on holes 17 and 18 to snatch victory from the jaws of a losing half.
Following that there was more drama with a nail-biting WhatsApp hole by hole account of the Brocton Junior team in the semi-final of the league playoffs at Beau Desert. Our juniors, much like the European Solheim Cup team won on the last hole. Well done to Hannah, Ellie, Tom, Alex and Maria for a stellar performance and good luck in the final on Sunday against Trentham.

If it aint broke… don’t fix it!
I write this newsletter and then a very helpful editor makes it look good for me, many thanks to Andy Harris who has done so for the past few years. Joe Smith has taken the baton and I thought you may like to see my introduction to him which I wrote as a precursor to this weeks content:
''Hi Joe, nice to have you taking care of my weekly ramblings. If it’s ok, I like to leave you to come up with a heading and surprise me. Other than that, please leave my text exactly as it comes to you in terms of punctuation and spelling as I sometime’s deliberately throw an odd use, of punctuation in to check to see if my Mum is reading! I’ve been asked multiple times to shorten my content by the publishers but when asking my readers, they always say they prefer to read it as it is and I prefer to write it that way as well. I’ve written it every week since 2005 and am proud to say I’ve never missed a single one, that’s got to be close to 700 weeks! I get quite a few favourable comments from non-members who get passed my newsletter and you’ll find I often like to tell a story instead of focusing on sales or lessons etc. The truth is actually don’t like retail unfortunately but I wouldn’t really say I was in retail - I love golf and helping golfers boosts my self-worth and in doing so I’ve got into club fitting and building in a big way - a set of clubs I worked on was in use in the Solheim Cup last weekend and others have been used to win £££’s on various Tours recently as well as many club competitions. I’m one of only 5 or 6 establishments in the UK who can get Head-only product from the manufacturers and I believe the only club professional to be able to do so. We stock few waterproofs or bags (we direct people to the click and collect site for a better variety), I removed club displays from the shop last winter and built a coffee bar instead and don’t have a storeroom - everything goes on display in the shop and at the height of season we have 300 pairs of shoes on display as it ties in with the fitting aspect. We are a service centre for Motocaddy and Powakaddy, we have our own embroidery machine, I’m a qualified Plane Truth coach, I don’t see reps, I work everyday and I take members away to places like Turkey, Portugal, Florida and Arizona and I’m hoping to have another bash at playing when I turn 50 in four years time.''

Brocton Hall cufflinks…
We’ve been keeping it quiet for the past few weeks until the Senior Captains Away Day last week, but we can now reveal the new Brocton Hall cufflinks which we’ve had specially commissioned to reflect the clubs anniversary. They were kept back as a gift for the away day golfers but are now on sale in the Pro Shop for £15 a pair.
Once they’re gone, they’re gone so if you’d like to reserve a pair, click here and we’ll save them for you. They’re priced at £15 a pair and come in a presentation box.

Goodbye laces. Hello Boa Technology in today's golf equipment continues to amaze us year-on-year, but it's not just our clubs that are making strides in the tech department. Believe it or not, golf shoes are some of the most advanced products in the market thanks to the evolution of the Boa Fit System, which is replacing traditional laces. Not only does it fasten your shoe, but when the Boa dial is on the heel of your shoe, it pulls your foot back and down to provide the perfect fit for extreme comfort and stability out on the course. |

It's great walking to the first tee with a new driver in hand (that's been custom fitted to suit your swing, of course) that you know will help you outdrive your playing partners, but sometimes it can be a simple change to the ball that you're using that has the biggest effect on your game. |
