Nations Cup

Saturday just gone was a great example of the brilliant atmosphere at the club I mentioned above, as the men played for the Nations Cup.

Over the past decade this event has been the most anticipated of the golfing social calendar and this year was probably the best ever with great team outfits and great fun in the bar.

Well done to Jon Brookes who MC’d the day and congratulations to the defending champions, the Superheroes

In must also say a big thanks to Mick Dilworth for picking me for the 'Social Bandits’ team, made up of Tuesday Social golfers. I had a great time!

Pro Ams

Tuesday Social

Speaking of the Tuesday Social, we still had 20 golfers playing in it this week including Rich Nicholls and Pete Horsley who flew round to avoid the dark in 55 minutes!

This weeks winners were Ash Andrews and Gary Murphy with 18 points each. Next week will be the last one of the year - thanks to everyone who has played and thanks to Katie for her help every week and for Mike who ran it if we were away. We’ll be back next year for more of the same!

Credit to the Greenstaff

Full credit to the greenstaff - the course has been in unbelievable condition of late! I’ve been here for 17 years and I’ve never played on the greens so firm and fast, with the fairways so lush and springy at this time of year that I can recall.

We’ve had so much rain over the past two weeks and the greens were flooded after a downpour on Friday afternoon, yet the very next day we played in t-shirts and the course was akin to playing in Summer. Chip shots would run out like summer shots, putts held there line perfectly and the greens were as fast as we play them.

I played at Kingsbarns at St Andrews last week and everyone was raving about the condition of the greens the week after the Alfred Dunhill Links - well I can tell you that our greens at Brocton were better and faster!

Don’t put you clubs away this winter, get involved in the fun events; the better-balls, the texas scrambles, the Staffordshire Winter Pro-Ams with myself, Mike and Luke, the social events and maybe even suggest that your golfing guests might like to think about sharing the experience with you as a member.

These can be fit and built to your requirements. Just book a fitting or come and have a look at the options. Most of the woods don’t have head covers but they represent great value compared to new.

Since the game began in the 15th century, there is one thing that has never changed – the ball being the only piece of equipment used on every shot. Despite this, it still gets a raw deal with some golfers viewing it as less important than the clubs used to hit it. So, we decided to take a look back and see how modern golf balls compare to those of yesteryear.

In the beginning

Feathery balls reigned supreme for over 200 years in the early days of golf, but even they are relatively new compared to the original hairy balls (guess what they were stuffed with!).

It's hard to imagine what it would be like playing with those balls these days, and even the later-developed Gutty and Haskell balls left golfers with little-to-no room for error.

Where we are today
