What a week! Phew, what a busy week we’ve had! After a curt, meagre newsletter content last week, I’m back to my usual longer musings - detested by my editors and marketing team but loved by my readers (if I could add a cheeky thumbs up emoji, this is where it would go!!) I’m writing this on a train down to London on my way to meet up with an organisation with a view to enhancing our services to the patrons of our fine golf club. I’ve always said that there’s a lot of nice people involved in golf and you can’t know too many of them and that includes members, visitors, staff, caddies, reps and pretty much anyone who has a common bond through spending their valuable social time or valuable work time involved in what is really just a game. As I’ve said, you also can’t know too many people in this life and I’m lucky that in my role I get to know a heck of a lot of people. I couldn’t imagine me telling myself this when I was a shy 16 year old but my personal journey goes to show what a great game this is for so many reasons. (I turned pro 30 years ago this year and we’re planning lots of events culminating in a party night on September 12th.) You can play this game on your own for some tranquility, you can play with a bunch of friends, or make a bunch of friends and you can play it and spread yourself far and wide developing a huge network of contacts. However you use the game to fill your needs is perfect and the game of golf, now more than ever, is there to serve you. I guess the advertising strap line for golf and golf club membership could never be: “A healthy, low impact, outdoors game - good for the environment, good for the soul and enjoyed by a family of millions for life” But whatever the short version of this is, it should be advertised as such. Of course for us golfers - we just call it golf!
