Stopping scorecard scribbles... With all the bad weather around at the moment, it’s nice to know that the growing season and drier conditions are imminent. Lots of competitions are scheduled for all categories of membership and there is a huge team of committee members and volunteers who facilitate these events. |
It would be helpful for the purposes of checking competition scorecards, to ensure these cards are filled in clearly, especially with team formats and we are going to have an example of each format on the counter to show you what we’d need for each competition. The quicker the cards can be checked, the quicker the results can get out and handicap changes can take effect. Also if you are recording a supplementary card to activate your handicap, or create a handicap, you need to register in the computer beforehand. Anyone in the shop can show you how.

Roger Flint has sent me a precis of the very active Seniors section including:
Seniors matches
''632 covers are anticipated catering for home and visiting teams and have been agreed with Chef Justin for the season.''
Seniors competitions
''The long-established competitions will continue as in previous years with the addition of the Andy Saxon Trophy. This trophy has been presented to the club by the family of Andrew Saxon who was a relatively new member of the Seniors Squad and sadly passed away last year. The trophy is awarded to the best gross score in the Seniors Club Championship and the Senior Champion’s board has been amended to record both best gross and best net scores. The Senior Men’s Captains away day has been organised for Maxstoke Park on Tuesday 1st September.''
The Senior Men’s Opens
''BHGC have four Senior Men’s Open competitions each year. They are run on two days; each day has a morning competition and an afternoon competition. This year the Fourball Stroke Play is held on May 28th and is fully sold out.
The Fourball Better Ball Stableford held on Thursday, 6 August is currently 81% subscribed (and filling fast).''

''The Senior Men’s Opens aspire to support the Pro Shop and prizes are vouchers to be claimed there. The Pro Shop is proactive and actively supports the competitions. As Senior Men’s Captain I cannot ignore the role that regular members play in the ease in which we can field a team. The “swindles”, with regular year round attendances of approximately 30 players daily, provide not only much needed bar revenue for the club but a rich source of squad members and a number of swindle members do not wish to play on a regular basis but are willing, at short notice, to substitute in emergencies.” |

Turn up on Tuesdays
Many of you have played lots of golf over the winter but for those of you who have done more hibernating than club swinging, please feel free to make use of our services in the Pro Shop to re-acquaint you with the club, your clubs and others at the club. The Tuesday Social is one of these events and takes place every week once British Summer Time begins. It’s open to anyone to play between 3pm and 6pm and as well as playing, we’ll be in the bar afterwards to collate the leaderboard and announce the prize-winners.

Vegan Valentine's
Last weekend Katie and I joined the Captain’s table for Valentine’s night and it was a great event with Brocton member Andy Beasley crooning us through the evening. Many thanks to Justin and Shaun who whipped me up a brilliant vegan three course dinner, for any other plant eaters I can thoroughly recommend requesting this option.

Stocking up for 2020... We also have lots of promotions in the Pro Shop for you to get involved in and lots of exciting new stock is arriving from now on. I recently heard from a member who thought that we were selling off other product areas and reducing the stock of them. In fact the opposite is true and last year we had a record year in the Pro Shop in the categories of shoes, clothing, accessories and gloves with lots of members choosing new shoes from ECCO, Skechers, FootJoy and Stuburt as well as clothing from FootJoy, Mizuno and Lyle & Scott and balls from Srixon, Titleist and Mizuno. It's true there have been big changes over the years. We used to stock a large range of logo’d lambswool sweaters whereas these days more people buy layering garments and we can embroider almost any item onsite with the added benefit that they haven’t been gathering dust in a shop.
Pro Shops used to stock a large range of bags, waterproofs and second hand clubs and much cashflow was tied up in these areas as well as acting as miniature warehouses for manufacturers who loaded us up with a year’s supply of balls and gloves at the start of the season. We now have a more streamlined stock of ‘considered purchase’ fashion items such as bags and waterproofs and use Foremost Golf’s services to host many more items available for Click & Collect. |
Some big high street golf retailers are stopping selling ladies clothing and equipment but again we’ve just received a new range of TaylorMade and Cobra ladies items and partner with SwingOutSister for accessories and clothing as well as having specific ladies items and content to the ladies that receive this newsletter. This year we are introducing more brands than ever to tie in with our huge choice of equipment brands and we’ll be adding gloves from Callaway, Accessories from TaylorMade, bags from every company, clothing from Oscar Jacobson, Island Green, Stuburt, Mizuno and Foot-Joy and balls from Callaway and TaylorMade in addition to our current brands. The key will be small additions and lots of them – the golf retail environment has changed dramatically over recent years and the golf companies and internet retailers who go bust are the ones who are drowning in old inventory – who would have thought that our most popular product in the Pro Shop was coffee? You can enquire about any items online by clicking here. |

Get a grip
Mike is definitely the most knowledgeable Trainee Professional around and he can now build a set of clubs from scratch, coach any style of technique, relay first hand experience of low-scoring tournament play and present a wonderful first impression to the club. As the weather improves our ability to conduct group coaching returns and now is a great time to plan ahead before the main golfing season is upon you. We have lots of promotions for you to utilise as well! This week we partnered with Golf Pride and launched a re-grip promotion whereby anyone having a set of Golf Pride Align grips will get one free.

Pitchmark Problems...
One last thing, please remember to look after our course and mend your pitch marks.
Any ball hitting the green will have made a mark at this time of year. We also had this damage done to the 15th hole so please take the time to pick your ball up by hand.

A recent golf survey highlighted some very interesting statistics regarding golfers' habits and their equipment, two of which you can see in the image below. |
These stats might not mean a lot to you at face value, but the general recommendation is that you change your grips once a year, especially if you play regular golf. The truth is, grips lose their efficiency over time and when they do we end up gripping the club too tightly, which restricts our ability to swing the club freely. Just something for you to think about... | |
|
It's not only important that your grips are regularly replaced, but you need to ensure you get the correct sized grips. Our FREE grip fitting promotion has just started in-store and we recommend everyone giving it a try. Call us on 01785 661901 to take advantage. |
