Competition season is here... Lots of events to play in at the moment - the very best of luck to everyone playing in Captain's Day this coming Sunday.
Mark Newman has had a busy year, to say the least, and quite probably not for the reasons he expected!
Much like many others at the club, he now deserves a nice sunny day and some good company to celebrate all the best aspects of the golf club together. Don't forget you can also enter the Captain Pro Qualifier until the end of August, just enter in the shop before you go out - I'll publish the leaderboard very soon, the best 8 scores will play against the Captain and I during the Autumn with any pair beating us, sharing the pot.
You can enter as many times as you like with different partners but each person can only qualify once.
Club Championship
For the first time ever the Club Championship was played over two days at the weekend.
It looked for a while as if Saturday would be the only playable day due to the weather, but fortunately, the forecast was wrong and there was some great golf played.
Tom Beasley lifted the Championship thanks to a scintillating 64 on the first day with 5 birdies and 13 pars.
He drove through the back of the first green with his first tee shot, which is a very narrow shot to take on when you hit it 340 yards so I think that declared his intention early on. Looking at the boards, a total of 64+72 for 136 was the best score since 1960 when Mr S Stowe won with 135. The nett (Twigg Trophy) was won by Paul Sutton who also finished second in the gross tied with the ever-consistent Neil Johnson.
Paul has won the Club Championship on 11 previous occasions and his gross score of 68+72 for 140 would have beaten his own winning score on 10 of those other occasions. Great scoring Paul! Al Birch, Jon Brookes and Jack Murphy provided a great service as they manually entered and processed all the cards, all day on both days. Pro's Day
My annual Pro's Day competition is coming up on Saturday, August 29th and it's a special year for us as I'll have been a professional for 30 years in September.
The format is going to be an Am-Am Stableford format with the best 2 scores from 4 to count.
It will be open to all CONGU handicap members, male and female, the entry fee will include 2's and the Hole in One sweep.
There will also be a prize to play for on every hole, for different 'achievements' and the halfway house will be open with some free refreshments. You can enter the same as you have been by booking a tee time from this Saturday morning. With 4-balls there should be plenty of time to play.
