Popov & DJ in a league of their own There are sporting shocks, and then there’s the World No. 304 winning a Major!
Germany’s Sophia Popov finished on -7 at Royal Troon to claim victory at the AIG Women’s Open. Despite having never won on the LPGA or Ladies European Tour before, the 27-year-old fought off challenges from stars like World No. 8 Minjee Lee and seven-time Major Champion Inbee Park. The ladies' professional game has undergone a crisis of confidence over recent years and it struck me last week that the marketing divisions of ladies Pro golf worldwide could do with getting together.
For example, in the men's game, we have always had the 'Open Championship' and 'Seniors Open Championship' and for years, much annoyance has been caused by commentators referring to them as the 'British Open', which doesn't even exist. Yet the Ladies equivalent has been played with the title of 'Ladies British Open'!! All of a sudden, this year it's now become the 'Women's Open Championship' which is part of the 'Ladies' European and PGA Tours.' Often in marketing, it's not enough to simply have a good idea - it takes a well thought out plan to make it congruent and a lot of care and effort to make it a reality. That's what our ladies committee has done at Brocton Hall in recent times with the result that we now have a fantastic 97 female members playing. There's a lot of keen golfers as well and 68 entrants were due to play in Mary Harris's Lady Presidents Day on Wednesday. Thankfully the storms look to have cleared to leave a great day for everyone. Surely it can't be long until the magic 100 number is reached?
Well done to everyone involved in generating the membership atmosphere and facilites that are the envy of many clubs. It's also great this year to see men and ladies competing in the same events, from the Captain's Away Day, to the midweek competitions and my Pro's Day this coming Saturday.
One of the benefits of having tee times every day, which I never thought would have been as well received as it has. POINT OF NOTE - Isobel will be joining us in the halfway house from 1:30 on Saturday - this will be the first time she's been at the club since retiring during lockdown and I know she was very disappointed to not be able to see everyone before she finished so it will be nice to see her back at the club. Meanwhile, on the PGA Tour, Dustin Johnson won The Northern Trust, the first FedEx Cup playoff event, by shooting a staggering -30. That ended up being an 11-stroke victory, which raises the age-old question of what’s more entertaining:
An all-out birdie fest or tough, battling golf? Shooting these sort of scores requires immense confidence in your game. So, if there's a part of yours that you're particularly struggling with, send us a message below and we'll be happy to help.
