Who will step up to the test..?
Hot on the heels of Mirim Lee winning the Ladies Major at the weekend (the drearily titled ANA Inspiration), we have the men's US Open this weekend at the notorious Winged Foot, quite possibly the toughest golf course in the whole of golf. Whilst Mirim Lee got into a playoff with an eagle on the 18th and a birdie to win the playoff, it's far more likely that the winner this weekend could finish like Geoff Ogilvy did in 2006 with a par, par finish being good enough to leapfrog the field. This was the one that got away for Phil Mickelson who has never won his home Open and treble bogeyed the 17th and also for Colin Montgomerie who missed the last green for a double bogey and missed the playoff by 1. My bets would be Tony Finau and Matthew Wolfe, players whose style is so dramatically different and consistent that under pressure they won't break down much. Perhaps a late entry will be registered by Mick Dilworth who slotted 5 birdies in just 9 holes to win the Tuesday Social with 24 points, including an NR hole! The scoring was fantastic with the top 11 scores only going down to 20 points. The greens are running incredibly true and at pace, given the fact they were hollow-tined only two weeks ago, and the scoring just goes to show that receptive greens and lush carpet-like fairways are a great combination for scoring. Conversely, firm bounces and tight lies are very often the courses defence at Brocton Hall. |
