An inspirational young lad...
I wanted to tell you about one particular young bright spark who is part of our Junior Coaching groups, George Booth. We have 20 new players coming through on our Academy programme and they're all doing really well but 9-year-old George's story transcends golf.
He has Becker Muscular Dystrophy which is a rare muscle-wasting condition but you wouldn't know to spend time with him as his attitude and spirit are so uplifting. Nevertheless he struggles to walk or run far and keep up with his friends and can only be active for a short time before his legs go into spasm and cause pain. He uses a wheelchair for walking any distance through the NHS but he heavily relies on someone pushing him the majority of the time. George's dream wheelchair is a trekinetic power chair that is lightweight, all terrain and will be big enough to last him into adulthood. With this chair he would be able to drive himself to and from school, go to the park with friends, go on the beach and we would all be able to walk the dog as a family on any terrain. This chair would really give George so much independence and open up a lot of activities that he just can't do at the moment. He was due to play his first holes on the course this week on a buggy but ended up having to isolate after a classmate tested positive for Covid.
His goal is to raise £11,500 and he's set up a Facebook page to help and is already halfway there with lots of supporters. Here's the link to his page I can tell you, he hits a pretty nice golf ball too! |
