Ineresting changes
There’s talk further down in the newsletter about driver shafts possibly being shortened under new rules on the PGA Tour. There’s also been another development this week as the PGA in America have announced their three events, namely the PGA Championships for men, ladies and seniors, will all allow the professionals to use laser rangefinders and GPS devices during the tournaments. There’s always been slight differences between the rules for tournaments between pro’s and amateurs. For instance like pro’s aren't allowed to wear shorts in competitions. Even in our local events, we’re allowed to use GPS devices in tournaments, but not in Open Qualifying or European Tour events and we have to use the same make and model of ball for the whole round, the only thing that can change is the number. The hope is to speed up play but they get so used to having far more data on their meticulously detailed yardage charts that I’m sure they’ll use both methods, largely because they’re trying to hit particular slopes and landing areas that may not be near the actual final target. They also have charts individual to them that tell them how much to add on or take off from the yardage to allow for wind direction, strength, temperature and slope and grass type for every shot which they’ll still have to refer to. We do it automatically due to playing the same course often, I presume you’ll take one or two clubs less for a 120 yard shot downhill off the 3rd tee at Brocton compared to the same yardage uphill on the next hole? |
