We hope you're well. Whilst Valentine's Day took place last weekend, we have to admit - we've fallen for a lot of the new product that's awaiting you in the pro shop! Until the time comes when you can take a closer look, we are still here to help in any way we can so please don't hesitate to get in touch. We're getting the Pro Shop ready for next week, just in case Boris throws a curveball and allows golf to open immediately, I do think there's a distinct possibility of that, although I doubt the shop can be open for anything other than check-in for a while. Enjoy the read, where we start with some images of the chilly course this past few week. |
Please remember... Remember if you want to use the practice area once we're open, you need to book an hours slot with us in the Pro Shop. It's also a perfect time to have a swing refresher and set off on the right track for the year ahead. At the very least we can save you countless hours of frustration as you try to get the hundreds of YouTube videos out of your head!! There's certainly a trend for 'turning your body through impact', or 'clearing the hips' in the videos over recent months, which interestingly has the effect of slowing the clubhead speed down in many cases. I'll show you how to speed the other end of the club up, the clubhead or business end! What's in the bag
I said I'd tell you what's in my golf bag last week but I've not managed to go through it all yet. |
A couple of things that surprise people are that I often use yellow golf balls and that every club in my bag has a graphite shaft, including my putter. The yellow balls are because sometimes they are easier to see in the rough (yes I do frequent the rough) and after hitting a ball onto the green, it often looks from the fairway as if the ball is closer to the hole than it actually is - very useful in Matchplay! The graphite shaft have been in every club in my bag for over a decade - it's not because I'm getting old! I first used them in my irons as my wrist joints were aching from winter practice and the graphite reduces vibration - my aches cleared up after a couple of weeks and never came back. I use an ACCRA graphite shaft in my putter and they make 4 different flexes, I use the softest one because it makes the putter feel softer off the face which I like. |
|
The shafts vary in weight enormously as they go through the set with the lightest in my driver and the heaviest in my putter. - Driver - 55grams
- 3 wood - 65g
- Hybrid - 85g
- 4 Iron - 95g
- 5-pw - 110g
- GW & SW - 125g
- Lob wedge - 130g
- Putter - 130g
There's long been a myth in golf that graphite is more flexible than steel, but of course all the hardest hitters in the world use graphite in their woods whether on the PGA Tour or in Long Drive Championships. So, I'm not using graphite becasue I'm getting older, what I'm doing becasue I'm getting older is changing to use some of the more springy-faced irons for extra height and yardage! I'm loving the fact lots of irons this year look like a performance club but have the engine of a forgiving club hidden within them. It's like a supercharged Land Rover with the body of an Aston Martin!

Account updates
I sent out a statement of everyone's Pro Shop accounts on Tuesday.

Berger's victorious eagle | Spieth's comeback continues Daniel Berger emerged victorious on Valentine's Day after a grandstand finish worthy of a champion. Having double-bogeyed the 18th hole to complete his third round, the young American had a change of fortunes come Sunday as his stunning eagle left him two shots clear of the rest of the field at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. However, the story of the week arguably came a few spots further down the leaderboard as Jordan Spieth competed down the stretch for the second consecutive week. It might not sound like a big story given the phenomenal start to Spieth's career, but the American has been battling with his game for a few years now in a stretch that saw him fall to 92nd in the World Rankings. Could this be the start of a resurgence for Spieth? The signs are certainly there! |
Distance Measuring Devices allowed on Tour In other news, distance-measuring devices (laser rangefinders) will be permitted at the men’s, women’s & seniors’ PGA Championships this year. Whilst this has caused some debate amongst golfers and experts alike, it’s a reminder of just how incredibly useful they can be out on the course, saving time and shots. If you're still pacing out your yardages from the 150-yard marker, maybe it's time to look at how these fantastic bits of technology could help your game? Send us a message below if you'd like to explore this further. |
