Wedge Challenge
In contrast to full shots in golf, one of the pre-requisites to good wedge play is to be able to get the ball to take off the club face 'slowly'. If you intend to play a gentle pitch shot over a bunker there would be little point in attaining an impact position that creates distance and a powerful trajectory.
There is a great test that we can do with the Flightscope Launch monitor indoors which forms the basis of next weeks '55 yard Wedge Challenge.
The goal is to try to hit a 55 yard wedge shot, with a clubhead speed at impact of 55mph and the ball also taking off at 55 mph. When these parameters coincide, the spin rate of the ball gets over 12,000 rpm - 3,000 more than most people are able to generate.
How is it done?
Well, if you use something like a 55 degree wedge (sand wedge) and you return to a similar position to your address at impact, on a fairly level strike path, the ball will do the rest. It's great for seeing what your tendencies are and what elements you can work on. For example - I tend to achieve a 55 yard carry when my club is only travelling at 45 mph at impact. This is because I tend to de-loft the club on the downswing - great for distance on full shots but not great for consistent wedge play. I have to feel like I add loft through impact to achieve the right impact.

Whilst I was in Arizona playing a Pro-Am, I arranged to meet a golf engineer who builds golf shaft frequency analysers - used to measure the true flex of shafts. John Kaufman has played golf to a great level, playing in the UK in Amateur events over many years and happened to be on his winter vacation 40 miles from where we were staying. It was very interesting to meet him and I now have one of his machines in the shop.
I've used a frequency analyser for the past 9 years and this replacement machine will allow me to also test the torque (twist) of shafts PLUS it has a really cool pneumatic clamping system!
I've also replaced my swingweight balance which is the gauge I use to measure the feel of the head weight of a golf club. If you have a club that feels too light, you'll often hit a pulled shot and if the swingweight is too heavy you'll have difficulty in getting the club face back to square at impact. The new machine is a digital version which means I can measure to within 1/10th of a swing weight and predict accurately how different weight grips will alter the finished balance.
