Cleveland Fitting Cart

New in the pro shop is the custom fitting cart from Cleveland Golf. They were the most popular wedges in the UK last year and I've been selected to fit the wedges for the company - a process that includes 10 different screw in shafts and 10 different heads.

You can try different bounces, two style heads and different loft and shaft combinations with two different head finishes. Custom fits are free of charge and include an analysis of your distance gapping and short game technique which has a direct link with the best style heads to use.

If your wedges are looking tired, you'd like a new set of matching wedges or have never been fitted for the shorter clubs before, click here and we'll book you in.

Now is a great time of year to get your equipment ready for the impending golf season. I have a limited number of spaces remaining on this years 'Achievement Through Commitment' Academy package which is 8 lessons throughout the season and can be paid by direct debit. The cost is £315 which means you're only paying for 7 lessons.

Priority bookings are made for Academy members and you can send me updates, swing videos and questions throughout the year. The clocks change in four weeks time and some clients have already had their second lesson of the Academy this year so don't get left behind!

We also have four lesson packages and an unlimited lesson package which is £600 for six months. Click Here to reserve your space or enquire further.

Course strategy pays an important part in saving shots and we cover it in the Academy with on-course sessions. Here's a few golden rules: " The bigger the penalty associated with a hazard, the more the target should be moved away to avoid it. " On most holes choosing an iron off the tee instead of a driver gives away strokes " Unless there is danger close to the hole, most golfers score better by laying up closer to the hole rather than 80 to 100 yards back " Your ability to putt well is dictated by how far away you leave your first putts, not how many long ones you hole.

Putting features in the GAME Golf challenge which I have set up for March. I've invited all the GAME Golf users who've bought them from the Pro Shop to see who can be the best putter in March. The device tracks how many times you've hit each club and where, how far etc. The aim for March is to see who can take the fewest putts for every green that you hit it in regulation, wherever you play in the month. The results can be tracked on the GAME Golf website by the participants during the month. I'll post the results here as they come in - to get involved in the challenge, you'll need one of the GAME Golf systems which we sell for £149 in the shop.

Also coming soon:

Great news for members of Brocton Hall as we confirm a reciprocal arrangement with another top venue - Fairhaven Golf Club in Lytham. I played there in the Final Qualifying for the Open Championship in 2001 and it's a brilliant golf course plus there's 5 par 5's so Brocton members can get their fix of three-shotter's there! I mentioned a few weeks ago that I'll be arranging some Pro's Days away this year and with Lytham & St Annes and St Annes Old Links on the same stretch of land, it looks like it could turn into a tour!

The reciprocal arrangement begins on 1st April 2015. The green fee will be at the members guest rate of £20 . All reciprocal bookings to made via the Fairhaven office.

To make a booking please contact their office on 01253 736741 (ext 2) or info@fairhavengolfclub.co.uk.

Further opportunities for Brocton Hall members abound as this year you all have a County Card included in your membership.

This entitles you to a discounted green fee at hundreds of golf courses all around the Country, not just in Staffordshire. The discounted fee is set by each golf club and booking ahead is compulsory in most cases, as is the need to show your County Card. The cards will be available for collection with your fixture list and members sticker which I'm told have now arrived.

This Saturday we'll be hosting a Pro's Fiddle. Pairs better-ball stableford with 3/4 handicap allowance, played off the white tees. Entry is £8 per pair including two's and remember there's no priority on the tee. Please call the shop on 1785 661485 if you need fixing up. The hollow-tining process has been completed and the weather looks good for Saturday so come along and get involved!

Steve Kanes has been putting the finishing touches to my in-shop-workshop this week by installing the new pneumatic frequency analyser. It measures the flex of a golf club as there's no such thing as standard in the golf industry and the terms ladies, seniors, regular, stiff etc have no value to be able to compare golf clubs to each other and to the golfer.

I've had an analyser for 8 years but this one allows me to measure the torque (twist) of a shaft as well. Thanks for your help Steve!

The workshop's been busy with the free MOT that has been in place for the last 2 weeks. Adjustments that have made a difference to golfers games include:

  • Change of grip thickness
  • Correcting loft gaps between clubs
  • Re-weighting clubs to help consistency
  • Replace broken shafts
  • Replace worn grips
  • Grinding the soles of wedges to restore their usefulness

In this video I'm testing the flex of three different shafts, all stiff flex, all the same length. The first one is Dynamic Gold Pro, the second is KBS Tour and the third one is Nippon Modus Tour.

As you can see they differ in their CPM (cycles per minute) reading on the frequency analyser. The difference between the readings from the softest at 357 (Dynamic Gold Pro) and the stiffest at 372 (Nippon Modus) is equivalent to 1 whole flex - in other words, the difference between regular and stiff flex or the Nippon plays 1 flex stiffer than the Dynamic. This will vary down the length of the shaft and it is the art and science of club making to match the shaft to the golfer.

The FREE  Club MOT's finish on Saturday but will be available during the year at a cost of £30 .
