Greetings from Nevil Bland
Brocton Hall Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

We're only 2 weeks away from the US Masters which means there are just two weeks left to have the chance of winning some FREE Cleveland wedges.

Purchase any Cleveland wedge between now and the first day of the US Masters and if Cleveland staff players Keegan Bradley, JB Holmes or Graham McDowell win, you will receive a full credit back for the cost of the wedges!

The Cleveland RTX was the most popular wedge in golf in 2014 and this year looks like following suit. We’ve got every loft available and can all be custom built and tweaked to suit your ‘style’. As with driver fitting, wedge fitting ALWAYS involves a little bit of coaching as very few golfers (of any ability] play the shots in the most repeatable way. In fact, the lowest handicappers often have some of the worst techniques as they have the practice time invested and the skills to cope with an inconsistent or difficult method. Here’s a few keys that you would need for a solid short game:

  • Acceleration – keep the clubhead moving through impact
  • Shallow strike – don’t be digging the leading edge in
  • Hit the ground before the ball – YES, this is true for a pitch shot, believe it or not!
  • Use some loft – Pitching wedges are NOT for pitching

Compared to what I witness people trying to do on a regular basis:

  • Decelerate – leaning the shaft towards the target and dragging the club through, watch those knees collapse when you do that!
  • Hit the ball first – you’ll be using the leading edge to hit the ball, a knife edge!
  • Too low loft – prevents the top three required elements .

Click here if you’d like a Cleveland wedge fitting with the US Masters promotion, or just a wedge fitting for any club, or even just a lesson with your wedges. The key here is do something if the sentences beginning with red look familiar!!

The first mens medal of the year is taking place on April 4th, historically it can be a busy time on the tee in the morning but then we tend to find the next events spread out more during the day as golfers realise that they have the whole day to play. As we transition from the quieter months to the competition season please remember these procedures that are in place:

  • Visitors and Guests are not allowed on competition days.
  • Each player in the mens medals must sign in and pay individually in the shop.
  • We number the cards to save you any queue on the tee and the last player in your three ball to sign in would collect the cards.
  • Play should be in three-balls, in the event of finding yourself as a twosome, your card should be signed by the pro shop staff before playing.

If you ever need fixing up, or need a third, you can call the shop on 01785 661485 and we’ll endeavour to complete your group. We often fix up 40-50 golfers and send out emails to alert everyone of spare players. This is a facility that works very well and negates the need for tee times so it’s a win-win for everyone.

Well done to the winners in the Captain/Pro qualifying competitions at the weekend – Over 150 people played and the there was phenomenal scoring! The 8 pairs will play us during the year with any pair that win, playing off for the Captain/Pro trophy. We haven’t lost a match since 2012 and only 1 that year I think but every year they are hard fought games and attract some attention.

Saturday qualifiers:

  1. Stu Hunter & John Dolphin 60
  2. Neil Flowers & Neil Johnson 62
  3. Mick Dilworth & Josh Smith 64
  4. Ian Thwaites & Steve Tinniswood 65

Sunday Qualifiers:

  1. Andy Jones & Steve Trotman 62
  2. Alan Birch & Simon Bright 65
  3. Paul Hanlon & Mark Wheatley 65
  4. Bill Whittle & Steve Turner 65

In the Workshop

I’ve been busy getting clubs ready for the season this week with lots of re-grips and some serious ‘pimping up’ with these fancy coloured ferrules.

It’s amazing how you can make a club feel brand new again with new grips and the other cost-effective things we can do to rejuvenate tired clubs include:

  • New colour matched ferrules – match your grips, bag or football team?
  • Loft and lie adjustments – clubs bend out of their original specification through use.
  • Re-grind – get rid of unsightly dents on the sole which can drag in the turf

Before 'pimping':

After 'pimping':

I’m sometimes asked to re-groove clubs but this can’t be done these days without making the clubs illegal.

In the workshop this week:

  • Miura 1957 cavity irons – Aerotech Steelfiber shafts – New Golf Decade Plus4 grips
  • Mizuno 850 driver – ACCRA I-series shaft
  • Titleist re-shaft
  • Colour ferrules
  • Srixon 3 wood and hybrid – ACCRA AC shafts
  • Mizuno irons reshaft – XP105 gram shaft
  • Loft and lies
  • Superstroke putter grips

Members Accounts

Please clear any unpaid balances on your accounts. We can’t provide a credit facility and any monies left outstanding unfairly impact our ability to provide a complete service. On the flip side there are plenty of new products in the shop for you to purchase using your credits from competition winnings etc.

Game Golf challenge

I challenged users of the Game Golf shot tracking system to a putting challenge during March to see who was the ‘Boss of the Moss’, who could take the lowest average number of putts per green in March. The Game Golf device is very easy to use and provides very useful statistics to chart your game and see far you hit your shots and how your golf compares to others of the same handicap. These challenges make it fun as well as you can find people who use the device and compare your games and set up your own challenges to invite people to.

Here is the top of the leaderboard at the time of writing with a couple of days to go:

If you want to get involved, I’ll be setting another challenge up soon, we’ve got the Game Golf’s for £149 which is £10 less than most places. I’ll have soon very exciting news, maybe next week, of a phenomenal use for another swing measurement device, Swingbyte, which I’ll be doing some Beta testing of shortly.

Over the next few weeks you’ll notice one or two exciting new additions to GolfBuddy’s distance measuring device (DMD) range, in the form of the BB5 (band) and WT5 (watch).

How’s your course management? Are you fed up with coming unstuck at the same hazard round after round? Within the comprehensive GolfBuddy range we can find a DMD that helps you address the issue of poor club selection so you can swing with confidence. Watch our video to find out more on GolfBuddy’s range for 2015.
