Thanks for your donations so far to the 24 hour Golf Challenge on Thursday 2nd/Friday3rd July. Along with Bill Whittle and Steve Hirst we'll be playing non-stop for 24 hours, all through the night. My charity is the Birmingham Children's Hospital and I have a donation site here. You can book to play with us for one of the seven rounds or to caddie for us and join in that way too.
Tuesday Social golf was played on a windy day with the flags on high spots which lead to tough scoring for all but the winner - Rich Nicholls who scored an impressive 20 points and was a roll away from eagling both the second and third holes.
He'd been for a driver fitting the week before to see what a new club could do for his game. I don't usually mention names but in Rich's case I'm sure he'll forgive me as it turned out he was driving it great - at least by the end of the session. It' a good example of how the goal with a fitting session is for your game to improve - whichever way is the best.
In Rich's case his main complaint was hitting his drives too high, yet when indoors on the launch monitor his shots were flying too low - far lower than the optimal for his swing speed and his technique displayed all the traits of low-hitting drives. A lot is written these days about how to hit better drives by teeing the ball up high and hitting up on the ball through impact, but I see a lot of people who hit the ball far worse like this than if they teed it lower and hit level through impact. Rich had fallen into this trap, leaning back at address on purpose and if he hit the ball worse as he went round the course, he would exaggerate the move. Once we teed the ball down and explained the dynamics of impact - his current driver was performing as well as anybody I've ever seen drive the ball.
A fitting end to the story would be that he drove the ball awesome to win the Tuesday Social - but he didn't even take it out, strategic move in the wind Rich!
Tuesday results:
- Rich Nicholls 20 £14
- Chris Perks 17 £11
- Mick Dilworth 17 £10
- Holly Hunt 17 £8
- Ryan Collier 17 £7
- Daz Poole 17 £6
Two players in the top five used the Stewart Staples Memorial Wonky Wedge this week and there is now a tie at the top with Neil Johnson, Mick Dilworth and Ryan Collier all winning on 17 points. At the end of the season we'll be having a 'chip-off' with the top five scorers to decide a winner of the trophy and prize voucher.
Some great achievements this week on the golf course:
- The 1966 World Cup squad played at Brocton Hall on Monday for their annual golfing pilgrimage and managed to avoid the showers, although not the cold.
- Steve Hirst got his name on the boards with a nett 67 in the Jubilee Cup - getting ready for the 24 hour golf challenge!?!
- The Scratch Team won at home to Moor Hall on Sunday to the tune of 7-1. They're looking good too - decked out in FootJoy shirts, embroidered by us in-house and sponsored by Pickering and Butters solicitors.
- Roy Summers scored a hole-in-one on the third!
Good luck to the Lady President for her day on Wednesday and the President for his upcoming weekend - you've finally got the weather sorted for it!
Next Wednesday (June 10th) we will be holding a very special EX-Demo Demo Day all day long. Further below in this newsletter is a comprehensive list of all the clubs which are either Ex-Demo, Aged stock (brand new but no longer a current model) or simply second-hand. These will all be available to buy at way below normal cost prices and most of them can be built to your specification at no extra cost with a choice of shafts and grips, plus you can hit most of them and compare to your clubs before you buy.
Very often we see some 'old faithful' clubs in peoples bags which have actually gone way past their effective best and compared to today's clubs would be considered heavy, stiff or simply worn out! This is a great opportunity to grab a bargain and take advantage of free fitting and hitting!
The full list of clubs can be viewed here.
Speaking of wedges, Cleveland Golf have a fantastic offer at the moment which means you can buy an RTX 2.0 wedge and get another one for half price.
I'm a fitting centre for Cleveland wedges so the bonus for you is that if you need something different to the normal specification - it can be built right here at Brocton in my workshop.
