Greetings from Nevil Bland
Brocton Hall Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

Our Charity 24 hour golf challenge takes place next Thursday and Friday for Nathan Lamey, Steve Hirst, Bill Whittle and myself plus guests joining us to play or caddy on the day. There's a sheet in the Pro Shop for you to have a go at guessing the following:

- Our total stableford points (7 rounds x 4 golfers x level par = 1,008 stableford points)
- The number of balls we'll lose in 504 holes (Through the night we'll be using flashing LED balls)
- The number of birdies we'll have in 504 holes.

There's still some chance for you to join us as well although bizarrely the 1:00am slots were the first to fill up. You can play with us for 18 holes or caddie or just come along and offer your support. It's all in great causes for the Birmingham Children's Hospital, Macmillan Cancer Research and the Captain's Charity.

Mike Dewsbury and I were attempting to get through to the final qualifying for The Open on Monday but we both missed out, Mike at Mere in Manchester and myself at Luffenham Heath in Rutland. It's always a quirky event as there were just 7 spots available out of 120 at most of the dozen venues.

Throw in the fact the courses are set up really tough and it's so easy to never get off the blocks by playing defensive or blow a good round with one misplaced tee shot or approach by being too aggressive, having said that it's great to be playing with a chance to get through to the Open and this is my 23rd year of playing in it. Here are some 'Uniquely Open Qualifying' traits: -

- Having to detail the clubs you're going to use beforehand so they can be checked for legality
- Driving to the tournament and seeing AA road signs advertising the route.
- Reading the 23 A4 sheets of rules and conditions.
- Not being allowed distance measuring devices - they even remove the 150 yard markers and tape over the screens on electric trolleys!
- Being handed the following on the 1st tee - Scorecard, R&A Rule book, tournament rule book, local rule book, pin positions, pace of play sheet, pencil, pitch repairer and numbered bag sticker!
- Being required to count the number of clubs we've got in front of the starter.
- Watching your playing partners trying way too hard!
- Watching those with good scores hanging around the 18th trying to read your body language to see if you've beaten them!

Then on Tuesday it was thanks to Foremost Golf for a great tournament at Kings Norton in the Midland Region Foremost Championship.

Katie caddied for me which we reckon is the first time she's done so in 15 years - before we had the kids. On that occasion I won the Leicestershire County Open, beating Gary Wolstenholme by a shot - this time I didn't, but I promised not to mention that she's dropped a bottle of water down my bag and run over my foot in the first minute.

Back at Brocton, Srixon sponsored the June medal & Mick Blagg Trophy last week in which Simon Bright shot a fantastic course record 64 containing SIX birdies and a 3 -putt on the 12th. Congratulation Brighty!

I wasn't that impressed by the USGA's selection of the host club, Chambers Bay, for the 115th playing of the US Open championship. It was a brave move but maybe better suited to a regular tour event. The Open Championship next month will be played on a historical venue, St Andrews, that will inspire memories of past championships and great champions, just like many US Open golf courses, all magnificent golf courses highlighting the very best of historical "American" architecture. Don't get me wrong, Chambers Bay is an amazing place that will unfortunately get shredding by disgruntled fans (impossible to watch golf), media (next to impossible to broadcast or report on golf), and players (just different and players don't like different!) And I would love, I repeat, love to play around this place.....it's just so cool! But a US Open??......it is/was just a wrong choice in my opinion.

However when it was all said and done, Chambers Bay may have won....a dramatic finish where the world's best rose to the top of the leaderboard.

Here's a photo and a message from the Chairman of the Greens Committee, Kevin Mellor, who also played an active role and deserves thanks for the new practice nets in the walled garden:

"It's always been a satisfying feeling. A glass of beer in hand as you survey the newly cut lawn. No thought at all that it will need to be done again next week. Now let's consider the Head Green Keeper and his team. Andy, Richard, Ian, Gary, Lee & Liam have their garden to tend as well. One hundred & twenty three acres, two practise areas, 62 bunkers, over 100 steps, two well stocked lakes, £0.5m of equipment and many species of trees. Not forgetting, ducks, jays, buzzards, foxes, an owl and a herd of deer to share the space. The result? A magnificent golf course nearing its peak condition. Despite still having early morning frosts until last month. Thanks to the Professional and the Course Chairman, they also are the best dressed team in Midlands' golf when the British weather intervenes. Am I right? Am I biased? Am I proud to be a member of Brocton Hall? You decide."
